Hello,
Could you tell me who I could contact regarding the laws there in St Thomas about real estate. My father passed away 2 1/2 years ago and owned a condominium on the island. We have since found there may be problems with his will, and want to find out if there is any applicable laws they may override the will, etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

p.s. I put this on the USVI Travel Message Board in error. Sorry!

Uh, yeah. How about a probate attorney?

There are a number of funky laws down here on wills of which you should be aware. For example, after-born children and, under certain circumstances, illegitimate children, have a right to take an equal share from the decedent's estate, regardless of the terms of the will. See 15 V.I.C. s. 18; In re Eatate of Moolenaar, 24 V.I. 234 (Terr. Ct. 1989).

I have had good luck with Tom Bolt & Associates. They did my house closing and they were very reasonable and the guy I used Patrick Hagler was a great guy.

here is his contact info copied from one of his emails:

You will DEFINITELY need to get a lawyer down here. Don't even think about trying to do this on your own. Its such a cliquely area that they will just blow you off. If you need another reference a woman I met is a paralegal at a large firm as well, they handled the 9 million sale of the Hans Lollick islands. They are probably more pricey, the larger firms usually are.
