Moving to STX fully in March...I have a part-time DJ business on the mainland and considering bringing my (rather heavy and bulky) DJ equipment. Can anyone advise if the need exists on island for a wedding, party, night club, etc....type DJ? Thank you and GOOD DAY!

MM

God day and welcome to the board. The market here is very saturated with DJs.

tons of DJ's and they all play the same music (though I'd guess that indicates there's no real draw for "other" DJ's)

I'd love to goto a party that isn't blaring cylipso / reggae at ear bleeding levels; but I doubt there's any call for it unless you have a REAL good gimmic.

That is what I have been advised, plenty of Rasta-style music and Caribbean music but no "Mainstream" or Mainland type music. Just don't know if there would be a market for typical "Club" or "Wedding" style DJ. I thank you for your input! Good Day!

you know what Mike, thinking about what liquid flouride said there may be a DJ niche for us cheesy 70s and 80s music people.

I specialize in just that! I DJ with several local cover bands here in New Orleans and the good ole' Motown, 80's, 70's classic rock, as well as, my favorite "Freestyle" 80-90's like Debbie Deb, Stevie B, Kyper etc... I think I will bring minimal equipment for now just to "test the waters" so to speak! I thank you all for your input! Good Day! MM

Maybe out east on STX? it's a lot different crowd there (I don't go often).

I've never been east with out a DJ playing something "more mainland" however, so I'd imagine that market is also fairly well represented.

I luckily found something no one was doing for my side business (though, it's more like a hobby / money black hole)

I say to hook up with wedding and even planners. You can start shooting out emails now. They would probably like to have another 'mainland music' DJ option for their clients.

I would welcome a DJ that didn't play that incredibly boring (same beat, different guy screaming) west indian crap.

Come on down!

Do you have the venue or have private gatherings planned - or are you a customer who'd patronize a place which played the music you prefer?

As I have not moved to the island yet I cannot say what the market for my services are. However, I am just putting feelers out there as to whether or not there would be a market for "mainland" style music vs. the traditional rasta or west indie currently being played. I would just be giving the option to the people and/or the venue. Couldn't hurt to a "Cheesy 80's Night" or a "Old School type night a any given venue. You never know until you try!

I've no idea if it's the same on STX but on STT, along with visiting musicians, we have some really talented musicians living here who play the good old stuff. What they charge is often only a little more than that which a DJ would command. The scene in STX may be completely different - just a thought!

I am also a sound man for several local cover bands here in New Orleans so I am very much into the live music scene. I work along side these bands as well as DJ before the show and during the breaks. I am all about the live music scene and respect the local talent to the utmost!
