Hi All,

I need a rental car for one month while down in STX for my pre-move visit. I'm planning on going with Avis, but before I book it, does anyone have any ideas on other good companies I could call first for quotes for long term car rental.

Thanks
Suzanne

Longer term car rentals have historically been very high. The cost for a 30 day rental is often over $1000. In the past friends have gotten the best deal with Centerline Car Rental or Olympic Car Rental. The major chains are usually more. Try to call and negotiate a better deal.

One friend actually bought and sold a car for a two month stay. The total cost was about $500, but, I doubt they ever registered or insured their car.

You might find someone on this board who will lend "rent" you a car for a month.

There are definitely rental companies on stx where you can get a car for $600 to $800 for the month. Call all of them and be willing to wheel and deal, be nice but be a little pushy. Turn on the charm and be friendly people will respond to it here. Try Judi of stx, I know she does quite a few monthlies as they all do. Don't ever wait for a call back when dealing with people here (in any business here), wait a reasonable period of time 4 to 6 hours or a day and call back.

Good Luck

I aggree with Betty. Call and ask for rates from the locals. I have dealt with Christie Powers of "Judi of St. Croix" with very good results. She and her husband, Chris, own the company and are great to work with.

Suzanne:

We use Hertz on STT for monthly rates. If you are a AAA (American Automobile Association) member you can get a discounted rate (15%). Our monthly fee for January - April 2008 is $710.99 plus taxes & fees (or about $840./month) for a mid size car. I imagine that the rates would be the same on STX.

Hope this helps.

I rent my STT cars from Hotwire for $13 - $15 a day. I sometimes have to do multiple rentals for the timeframe I visit, which is usually 15 days at a time. Avis is always the company assigned to rent me the car.

bluwater,

I never had the success that you did. I wish I coulda though! Here on STX the best I was able to get with Hotwire was about $32 a day with taxes. I was able to get a better price with a local but still far from what you're paying.
