i received a rash on my fingers and arm from a milky white liquid while trimming a leaf off a plant. at first it really stung but later developed into a small bubbly rash. i believe the plant may be called dumb cane related to the philadendron family.i have had it for 1 week now and it is not getting better. i have tried calamine and hydro cortisone cream. it helps a little with the itching, but it is not drying up. i also tried castor oil at the advice of a bush dr. any ideas for more possible remedies will be greatly appreciated. thanks!

if it has been a week with no improvement, might be time to go see a real dr.

What is locally called 'dumb cane ' here is Dieffenbachia -- there are at least 12 species and the milky white sap is very irritating - a local remedy would likely use the aloe juice from a healthy plant.

I have never had a rash from dumb cane, but have you tried some aloe vera? Not out of a bottle, but cut the skin off the gel inside and wrap it on the rash for a few hours... maybe? Mind you, I am not prescribing it. I am asking if you tried it. 😉

I hope you get well soon! Although - for some reason I think it's really cool that there is a plant that can do that.

Edit: I was curious so I looked this plant up on wikipedia.. and guess what! We had one of these as a houseplant when I was a kid. One time when I was pretending to be a dinosaur (haha) I bit the trunk of this plant, and it burned the crap out of my lips.

Sorry had to share.

i finally did get rid of it,but it took about 2 weeks. the castor oil seemed to help, but it might have been starting to clear up on its own. i wouldn't heitate to use it along with cortisone cream.if its really bad you might want to see a dr. for a more powerful rx cream than over the counter. it will go away, good luck.
