My boyfriend and I are moving to STJ for the summer, and we would like to ship his truck (small toyota) down soon. We would appreciate any tips and information that anyone has. We have read previous posts and heard of "handlers" this sounds great to us, but we would like more info. I would appreciate any help tremendously. Thanks a lot,
Erin

Hello Erin,

We have a section on shipping cars, click on this link: https://vimovingcenter.com/car/

http://www.managedfreight.com/ does shipping/clearing/inspection. You can try them and see.

If you want to read notes from someone that shipped a car try story #11 in the What to Expect section on this site.

Hi Erin,

Are you sure that shipping a truck down here is your best option when you are only staying on STJ for the summer?? It seems like it would be an excessively costly and complicated thing to do if you're only going to be on STJ for three or four months.

Depending on where you are from, the cost of shipping the car down here; the excise and road taxes you must pay when it arrives on STJ; and the cost and hassle of getting the truck registered, insured, and titled in the USVI (you cannot drive the car here with US plates or insurance, even on a temporary basis) will likely cost you $2000 to $3000. And that doesn't take into account the cost and hassle of doing all that in reverse to get the truck home this fall -- that is, of course, unless you plan to sell the truck on STJ or STT before you head home. (See the section on shipping a car for detailed info on this whole process.)

Having gone through the expenses and time-consuming experience of shipping our car here when we moved, I'd look at every other option for transportation during a summer stay on STJ that I -- and everyone else I ran into -- could think of.

That said, does anyone have any ideas on a more affordable and less complicated way Erin and her boyfriend could get around mostly independently on STJ this summer?

I'd say park his pickup and by one here. You can get reliable transportation starting at $1,000. Cars here are mostly a form of transportation, whereas they seem to be a status symbol in America. Not so, here. If he needs a truck, he can probably find one just like his here....and that would negate the costs that HipCrip mentioned....and the hassles, too.

My husband & I are coming down to STX for the summer/fall also, to see if this is where we want to relocate permanantly. We were going to bring our SUV down, but then realized exactly what HipCrip said - it would be way more expensive than is worth the trouble. Especially when you're talking about $2500 each way just for the shipping! Instead, we are going to drive it to Florida and store it there. I know that several of the car rental agencies will rent long-term, according to their websites, for about $500 - $600 per month. Has anyone done this before? Are the rental agencies good about taking care of maintenance issues if necessary? If not, we'll probably just buy something there then sell it before we leave at the beginning of Dec.
