ST. CROIX —The Bureau of Motor Vehicles (B.M.V.) recently issued a notice that vexed many Virgin Islanders. It reads: “MANDATORY: Effective Monday, April 11, 2016, all vehicle plates will be changing to the New Transfer Centennial plates. The price of the Centennial plates will be $49. You must turn in your old plates to window #2.”

I rather doubt that such a mandate is legally sustainable. I won't potentially bore anyone with a related story concerning something along the same lines which happened to me many years ago but suffice it to say that, instead of paying a ticket which I knew was totally unjustified, I asked for and received time off work to go to court. These cases had started coming before the presiding judge just the day before and he was sick and tired of them, threw them all out and reamed out the BMV and the VIPD for wasting the court's time over such nonsense.

So I have to pay an extra $49.00 for license plates I don’t even want when I register my car in June.

I need that $49.00 for car repairs :X

Selling retired license plates is a pretty big business. One of the most popular souvenir stores on St Thomas made a deal with the BMV to acquire all the retired yellow and black plates and sold them in their stores. What a sweetheart deal that was!

The VI govt could be making a small fortune selling souvenirs, but I guess that's beneath them. I can't tell you how many visitors ask about VIFD and VIPD shirts or patches. The fire station at Fort Christian is a MUST stop for many visitors.

SMH.

Then I want my retired plates back. I can sell them to make money for my car repairs!

I wonder if I report them stolen the day I'm going to register my car if I can avoid turning them in, then sell them 😀

If it were me, I would refuse to turn them in. I doubt that's a crime. Imo, it's up to VIPD to issue tickets if people gave wrong plate.

Do an ebay search for Virgin Islands plates. You can offset the new fee by selling your retired plate.

We should demand to know what they're doing with retired plates. Will inquiry senators and BMV.

Since $10 from every plate is going to the centennial commemoration does that mean people without cars are not able to attend festivities? It's only fair.

If we still lived here year round instead of only 3 1/2 months out of the year, I simply would ignore this outrageous demand by the BMV. This would never fly in a court of law. Theycan go pound sand on their centennial plates.

This happens in many states. They change plates on occasion. Why everyone is worked up is beyond me. Let's focus on important stuff like physically restraining non vehicle owners from any celebratory functions.

Its a sneaky $10 tax...that's what I don't like. If the GVI is so excited and proud of the centennial, why don't they pay for it rather than hang it on the backs of motorists.

They got $500k from the US Dept of Interior for the commemoration too. Hmmm. Wonder how much went to bloated salaries, kickbacks and the like. I'm joking about barring non drivers but I agree, this is BS (the $10), I don't care about the new plate.

They have changed the plates in NY but they didn't make you turn in the old ones untill you re-registered your car. They certainly didn't add an extra amount for a party. And NY is one of the highest taxed state in the union

You don't have to get the new plates until you have to re-register your vehicle.
Wonder what they're going to do about people with special plates.

Special plates like veterans, humane society, historical are exempt. Only standard VI plates

Totally sucks, I love our license plates and tourist always commented on how cool they were... I assume it a new design?

So is this for sure thing? Mandatory? I can't believe they're making people pay an extra $49!

Every few years they change plates but the extra $10 that is going to the centennial celebration has people pissed off as well as the way it's being presented as being mandatory. I don't have to register my vehicle until next January so will see how this plays out. I just don't believe the motoring public should be forced to contribute to a celebration that they may not care about.
It's a tax, basically. Just one more way for the VI Government to squeeze money from an already financially overburdened population to squander waste and misspend.

This only effects the blue plates. Not any personalized ones or ones for different organizations such as Humane Society, Veterans, Friends of the National Park, etc. You have to take off the old plates when you go to register your vehicle and turn them in with your paperwork or you won't be issued your new registration.

on the radio this morning they said the license plate gets changed every 10 years-would be about right because when i first got here, they were changing over to the new tag.

they also said special plates would not have to change over.

Maybe if one doesn't wish to contribute to a centennial plate, they should get a personalized one of their choice, if that's allowed.

In the two states I lived in, we never had to pay extra for new plates. They were lumped into the overall cost, and changed rarely. But more states are starting to charge, and requiring they be changed more frequently, and disallowing transfers. Cash cow for the states and 3M, who is lobbying hard, as plates are cheap to manufacture.

Being on a fixed income, I'm a little PO'd. But there are far worse things to get steamed over.

Exactly what the consortium article noted.

I Inspected and registered my car April 8th -- so I am good for a year and will be one of the last ones with the current plates I guess.
Thanks for the answers on the other questions.
