Christmas Day and New Years Day always fall on the same day of the week. For example, last Saturday was Christmas Day, and today (a Saturday) is New Years Day. But in 1917, the year that possession of the Virgin Islands transferred from Denmark to the United States, Christmas Day and New Years Day fell on different days of the week. Why?

(Somebody might soon post the answer, so think about it for a minute before looking.)

Christmas '17 and New Year's '18 WERE on the same day. New Year's '17 was much earlier in the year. 😉

East Ender: You got it. It has nothing to do with the Denmark/US handover, and there was nothing particularly unusual about 1917. In no year do Christmas and New Years day ever fall on the same days of the week. The New Years Day that does fall on the same day of the week as Christmas Day (7 days after Christmas) is in a different year.
