How is the nightlife on St. Thomas? What time do the bars close? Do most people go to bars at hotels?

I'm extremely interested in this myself, considering it will be my future profession on island. From what I can tell, many do not go out in Charlotte Amalie at night due to the crime. Red Hook seems to be a much more happening area, but I've yet to visit to see for myself.

Hello,

Nightlife in St. Thomas involves bar hopping, a few dance/bars, movie theatre, a few live shows at the couple live theatre/centers, live music at some bars & restaurants, happy hour, restaurants.

The bars close between midnight, 2am, 4am... depends on the day of the week, crowd.

Yes folks go to hotel bars and shows. Iggies at Bolongo Bay Resort is popular, they have a Caribbean show thats fun to see at least once or twice, they often have beach volleyball, also do kareoke on some nights, good food. Sapphire used to have a live band on I think Saturday night and Wyndham I think had one on Friday nights... I am not sure which nights but those two were attended by hotel guests and residents alike.

Downtown, Frenchtown, Havensight, Red Hook are the popular spots for bars/nightlife.

After a few weeks of going out often you will find the crowd is the same at the various watering holes. During season (Dec-May) the crowd is typically the younger seasonal workers. During the summer and Christmas break there are more highschool/college kids home for the holidays or on break from school.

Islander, Thank you very much for that info. If this can be answered in a general sense would you take a crack at it. How long does it take to travel from one destination to another (on average). For example, from Red Hook to Magens Bay. Or from Bolongo Bay to Magens Bay? The island is not too big, but I imagine it takes a while to drive a lot of places.

Thanks for your help.

And in regard to crime, visitors should not avoid Charlotte Amalie because of it. The only place you will find it downtown are the areas that you shouldn't be in anyway. If it looks a little shady/risky, don't go down that alley. The bars and resaturants are all in good areas.
