I know having your power back is WAY more important, but does anyone know if there has been any cable tv repair yet? We're due back (St Croix) at the end of this week and I don't believe there is any cable working right now at the condo we're staying. Coakley Bay on the east end. I guess this just shows our age that here we head down to the tropics for a couple of weeks....and we're thinking about tv! *-)

I think it depends on your cable provider. I have Choice and it's still down (at Questa Verde) After hearing from friends that Choice was "up" again, I called Choice and they said my antennae might need to be fixed and they put me down for a service call for whenever they are out in that area. So at some point I'll have cable, just don't know when! Call your provider to see what's up.

Hi,
We have Innovative cable at Coakley and it is still not working. We also are having power issues in some of the buildings, so you may want to check to see if your unit has power. There is a Coakley status meeting this afternoon, so if they have any estimates on when power and/or cable is back, I'll let you know. Kim

Innovative's cable plant is badly damaged on the East End. When WAPA installed new poles they made no effort to move the telephone and cable lines to the new poles. As of Tuesday Innovative hadn't even bothered to clear their downed lines from the roadways.

Assuming Innovative has the money and the will to rebuild on the East end I would think sometime in January would be when we will have CATV again.

You can't rehang coaxial cable like power lines. They will have to rebuild large sections of their system and rehang thousands of drops.

I bumped my Netflix subscription up to six.

Hulu is great. We've also been catching up on shows on cbs.com . . . lots of full episodes are available on there.

Paula,
I sent you a pm. Only the H, J, L, M, and N buildings at Coakley have power. Rumor has it that WAPA (power company) is waiting on more transformers (they've been ordered) and until those come in, the power won't be restored to Coakley. Apparently we have several damaged transformers and that's why the power is out. No ETA was given at the update meeting for when power will be completely restored. WAPA wasn't able to give us an estimate, according to the general manager.

Sorry I don't have better news for you.

Kim

I don't know how or why but I just received this email (below) at my work account and thought of this posting I had read earlier:

News Release

Innovative Crews Work on Areas Hardest Hit By Omar

ST. THOMAS, U.S.VI., Oct. 22 – Most Innovative customers in the hardest hit areas on St. Croix should soon find relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Omar.

Innovative crews and engineers have completed their assessments of last week's storm-damage to plant and equipment. The majority of the damage relates to downed lines, but also includes damage to a major 3,000-pair feeder cable that got wet in Christiansted and one 1200-pair feeder cable in Frederiksted. The cable in Christiansted is scheduled to be fully restored by early next week. An update regarding when the cable in Frederiksted will be fully restored will be announced in the next several days.

The affected areas in Christiansted and Frederiksted are as follow: Orange Grove, Herman Hill, Work and Rest, Richmond, Little Princess, Water Gut, Beeston Hill, LBJ Gardens, and Golden Rock in Christiansted, and LaGrange and Whim in Frederiksted. The extensive damage on St. Croix impacts both telephone and cable television services with the most damage affecting the cable television facilities.

Innovative Telephone President and CEO Clarke Garnett said areas in the east end of St. Croix such as Cotton Valley, Solitude, South Shore, and Grape Tree Bay suffered extensive damage.

"Once we re-grouped after the storm and completed our damage assessments, we began restoration work on St. Croix," Garnett said. "However, we realize we need to give the V.I. Water and Power Authority crews room to restore electricity to the area first. Once they complete their work in that area, Innovative will then have access to bring in full crews to restore Innovative services in the area. As WAPA has been bringing power back to these areas, we have been re-energizing our cable power supplies which enable both Innovative Telephone and Innovative Cable TV to restore service back to the respective companies' subscribers.

In addition to the East End and South Shore plant issues on St. Croix, Innovative

officials say there were also extensive damages in the Salt River and Judith Fancy area.

Officials say they anticipate it may take six to eight weeks to complete restoration work in these areas. However, the company anticipates most subscribers will see their service restored progressively over that timeframe.

Hurricane Omar caused no apparent damage on St. John. The only documented damage on St. Thomas attributed to the storm was an underground cable that got wet. Those telecommunications disruption affected the Hospital Ground and Beltjen Place areas. Technicians are working round the clock on restoring services in this area and are expected to complete their work by the end of this week.

Nevertheless, Innovative officials say they still advise customers to call the repair center to report their service problems by calling 912 or 778-1748 to ensure their issues are on record. PowerNet DSL internet customers whose telephone service is restored and continue to experience problems may call 714-3700 to make a report.
