ocean temp/drinking water

Hi.
Is the ocean surrounding St Croix the same temperature all year round? I think that is about 82 degrees? Is that correct? Does the water change at all during the winter?
Also, is the situation there generally that one does not have enough household water--so no toilet flushing etc? Is there even "city water" that gets chlorinated etc.(now that I think of it, I think I read there is a desalination plant--I assume then it has all kinds of chemical treatment--is that gray water for washing etc--or drinking? How commonly used is that?)--not that I would choose that--I would prefer a well--or, I guess a cistern. Is that what everyone has?
Thanks.

Hello Ocean Swimmer,

Temperatures do vary slightly. Visit our weather section at http://www.vinow.com/usvi/weather.php it has avg. air temps, water temps., extreme highs and lows, rainfall averages by month, hurricane stats...

Water temperatures in the Virgin Islands do not change greatly from summer to winter, however the 4 or 5 degree change is noticeable to those acclimated to consistently warm tropical weather. In the summer months the water temperature is about 83 degrees and in the winter about 79 degrees.

If you run out of water in your cistern you have to buy water from a 'Water Company' - they delivery it by truck load and dump it into your cistern.

But yes if you run out of water then you can't flush the toilet, can't take a shower... you turn on the tap and nothing will come out. Same deal when the power goes off; well when the power goes off you will have as much water as was in the pump when the power went off and can flush the toilet once with the water already in the tank.

There is city water but most don't have access to it.

Desalination water is not gray water; both are used in the VI. Gray water is typically used by large hotels/resorts, after being treated, to water the gardens, lawns. Some condos use grey water (just from sinks/showers) for flushing toilets. Some residents save their washing machine rinse water and use it to water their yard/plants.

A cistern is what everyone has for drinking, washing... water needs.
