one-month rental?

OK, after much agonizing and penny-pinching we took it this far and booked a trip to St. Thomas for a pre-move and "check things out" visit.

Now we are looking for a place to live for the two of us during the pre-move visit. Does anyone know of anyone that would rent out a small apartment or maybe just a room for just one month? We are kind of on a strained budget, so I thought this would save us money compared to a hotel. Any tips, advice, etc. would be very appreciated.

(And yes, I have read other posts on the site and realize that USVI is not the best place to go on a strained budget, so please don't admonish me for that. Hey, it's either this way or not at all - and then I would choose this way.)

Fredrik,

Some of the real estate agents here offer short term rentals. Also, in addition to Villa Fairview, check out Bellavista and Plantation Manor. The phone book web site should be able to assist: http://www.vihphonebook.com.

Also check out www.stthomasvirginisland.com. Monthly rates are available - good deals from August - October.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I did e-mail Villa Fairview about two weeks ago (before I posted here), but no response to date. May have to call them.

Could you give me advice too on what kind of rates I should expect on a one-month deal like this?

Hmm... I'm beginning to wonder if I bit off more than I could chew here...

We were actually hoping to rent a regular apartment - rather than the B&B type of thing - for rent maybe slightly higher than a normal apartment lease. The B&B's, nice as they may be, with $75-$100/night is just not in the budget for us.

After browsing some of the apartment ads on http://www.virginislandsdailynews.com/ we were wondering if it wasn't possible to get an apartment/studio/room for a month for about $600-$900 for the month we're there. Granted, we haven't started calling yet, just wanted to get my feet wet on this site. Heck, maybe even if someone just wants a couple of short-term roommates or just help with rent for a month.

I have read this site and message board for about 10 weeks or so now, maybe I should have known better. Slap my forehead I'm so naive, or...?

Fredrik,

What I found when looking for a short term is most people do not want to rent out apartmetns for a term of less than 3 months. The ones I did find on a month basis werre pricey. That doesn't mean that what you are looking for is not available, sometimes it just takes a little time and patience.

Some of the places in the listings above do offer monthly rates. Also from my personal experience, emailing businesses here is not very productive (there are a few exceptions... Managed Freight is very responsive on email!). The best way you'll find information is to use the phone. Oh yeah, and another hotel that offers monthly rates is the Mafolie.

Good Luck!

Chris

Yes, Villa Fairview actually came through, so we have a room and a roof and a place to stay and even a ride from the airport. Thanks for all the help and tips and e-mails. This is a great message board.
