planning a trip

It has been a dream of mine to move to the islands, even if only for a year or so, and just enjoy life for a while. I am working up the courage to "turn loose" and go for it. Of course, I would have to find a job to support myself, a place to live, etc. This wouldn't be an entire year off.

I have read the stories on this site, looked at all of the info it gives. I would like to plan a visit to the islands to get a feel for the place to make sure this is right for me. I don't really want to stay at a resort during this visit--I want a taste of daily life not a vacation. Where are some good places to stay for this type of visit? Also, what are some things I need to do, see, etc. while I am there on this fact-finding mission? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Amy

I was thinking the same thing...my family and I are coming down in early June for my premove visit/my brothers' high school graduation gift. I would love to stay right in town, but all the internet companies like expedia.com only give you the big resorts.

also, anyone had any luck combining a premove visit with a vacation? I am sure my brothers arent going to want to go check out the grocery stores with me!

I don't know for sure, but perhaps calling some of the real estate agents on island and asking about rental properties through them will be helpful?

Good luck!

Hello,

Amy - you could stay in a small inn or hotel; many are owned by a family or couple so they will afford you a greater oppurtunity to speak with the owner who could then share information about living here with you and just provide a more personal environment, rather then the resort atmosphere you are trying to avoid.

Meg - since its a graduation gift trip as well I agree with Nasus perhaps a vacation home/villa would work well for the family.

Thanks! The small inn or hotel idea is exactly what I had in mind. Any suggestions on how to locate one to make reservations? Like Meg said, all the websites give large resorts.

Meg, I would love to hear how your trip goes in June. I am not planning anything until fall. I will be interested to hear what you learn about living there--best places to live, jobs, fun, people, groceries, etc.

Amy,

My husband and I are staying at Cottages by the Sea when we return in May. We did not want to stay in a hotel either as we are moving to St. Croix in June. They have kitchenettes which makes the stay convenient for me as I am on a restricted diet - eating out all week can be very difficult!

If you are interested in staying there, their website is www.caribbeancottages.com.

thanks guys! anyone know of a small place where rooms are like 65-70 per night? we could just get two rooms as opposed to a villa...I'd love to be within short walking distance of downtown St.T but unfortunately most hotels dont say how far they are, or if its a feasible walk. Is there an area of Charlotte Amalie or a few streets with hotels that I could specifically search for?

Hello,

Amy - maybe I missed it, but which island are you interested in? If its St. Thomas, the list below applies if you want downtown. There are a few other places you could look at if you aren't necessarily wanting to be downtown.

Meg - on St. Thomas, downtown, small hotels/inns you could try:
