In February (15-24) my wife, my six year old son, and I are planning to be in St. Croix for a PMV and/or a family vacation. We are looking for a one bedroom with a kitchenette and a place for my son to sleep. We are not looking for anything fancy. We would like it to be on a beach (that we can reasonably swim on-with a beach view) and a possibly a pool and we are looking for reasonable access to town--preferably restaurants/bars/shops in walking distance. Of course we would like it to be clean and safe.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Hotel on the Cay might be a possibility - not many inexpensive places within walking distance of town, especially not with a 6yr old. It depends on yr definition of inexpensive - anything on Condo Row would be out.
If this is to be a PMV, may I suggest most strongly that you rent a car - you will see very little of the Island and life on it without one.

Waves of Cane Bay or the Cane Bay Reef Club would be good, inexpensive choices, but you will definintely need a car.

Pretty much everyone wants to find inexpensive housing on a swimmable, sandy beach within walking distance to everything they need. Supply versus demand means that the "inexpensive" part just isn't likely to find. There aren't all that many swimmable beaches on STX. Near town the water is very shallow across the reef until you are 100-200 feet offshore.

I'd suggest you go to www.skyauction.com and bid on one of the packages offered by Chenay Bay Beach Resort, which is about 10 minutes drive east of Christiansted. You can usually win one of the auctions for a rate, including all taxes and administration fees, of about $50-$60 per night and you can select the length of your stay at that price. There is a restaurant at Chenay Bay and you could also walk (about a mile) to Cheeseburgers in Paradise.

Alternatively, you can stay in a budget hotel in town (such as the Kronegade) and use the beach at Hotel on the Cay and have lots of restaurants and shops you can walk to. There is a small fee for the passenger ferry to get to Hotel on the Cay.

Whether your trip turns out to be a vacation or a PMV, you will need a car for at least a few days to check out the island.

Hotel on the Cay sounds great for them. It is very safe because it has its own island. With a nice beach and bar with beach chairs. It is right in town at the boardwalk. The ferry is $2, if you stay there it might be free I don't know. This time of year it is not a bad rate $125 a night for the two of you, the kid is free. There is a big free lot in Christensted for parking your rental car. Get your exploring done during the day. Lost at night might not be family fun time.

He is going to StX right in the middle of the "season". It is peak time for hotel charges...The Hotel on the Cay if you book through their web site have a special "internet" rate of $155 for 2 adults, kid free with a minimum of 3 nights stay.

thank you for all your responses. I will rent a car. And it looks like I will be staying for just about two weeks. To be more specific about the expense of the lodging I would like to spend less thatn $150.00 a night

Sorry I thought he was going in the summer. I guess I don't read the titles.
