We are on the waiting list for a PO Box at a couple of Post offices in STT...
I'm wondering if we should just get a box in a different place - like the Mailbox store next to KMART TUTU?

Any recommendations? Preferences? Thoughts?

I use the mailbox service at Vitraco Mall across from Pueblo Long Bay, because they call me when I have mail. I only use that box for packages and Netflix. You also don't have to go inside to get your mail - the boxes are accessible from outside, and parking is usually right in front. $15 month.

But, a lot depends on where you live or work.

Convenience is a big factor but the USPS boxes are less expensive than the private. Another consideration is that private mailbox services can also come and go like any other business and any change could be quite a hassle for a long term resident.

If your living on the east end, check out Red Hook mail service behind the mall.

Contract pending - we'll be on northside (near hull bay) + working in Tillet Garden (me) and Downtown (husband)

If you're in Tillet, the one at the Mall is best for you. I go in there every now and then for services, and they are always very nice. I know somebody else who had a box there, and they were thrilled. That company also has boxes in town, but that location isn't as convenient for either of you.

How exciting that you'll be at Tillet! What's your craft? I went to one of their fundraisers last night. Will you be here in time for the Nov Tillet Fair?

Tutu PO and Sugar Estate PO are both convenient for your respective locations if you decide to go the USPS route but maybe these are the two you're on a waiting list for. Good luck with the move - always such a chore!

I wouldn't recommend Sugar Estate because of the lines. Private boxes are worth their price, because of the time you save. I have both, because I don't want to have to go to the PO, find I have a package, and then stand in that long line to retrieve it. Most private mail boxes (PMB) also have extended hours so you have more time to get your mail.

Also, since the USPS is bleeding money, there's talk that they're closing locations. I hear the Havensight location is scheduled for closure. Those boxes will have to go somewhere, so the waiting list for a USPS box may grow even longer.

I think the demand for private boxes will grow as the USPS has more financial problems, so I hope that the market for PMBs grows, too. You have the option for more services with a PMB so they're worth the premium. It's probably only in a few locations like here where we don't have physical addresses that the demand for USPS PO boxes exceeds supply. Almost everywhere else in the US the mail is delivered to a physical location.

Get a PMB, IMO.

We always had a box at the kingshill PO on STX. Occasional wait in line, but very helpful when we were mailing stuff back to the states. But as you know Shera, convenience is #1 priority.

For the past 3 years on STX we've lived in a condo -
We've never had a cistern, had mail delivery to our address, trash pickup 2x week, terminix 1 x month -
I've been spoiled!

Ha, ha! You haven't fully lived the "island experience!" One of the reasons I moved here is because of the community experience. I like chatting with people at the PO and my PMB. I like getting to know the local kids and their parents and supporting them whenever I can. I like going to the political fundraisers and chatting with the candidates. I like patronizing local businesses and communicating with the owners or employees. And living here for all these year has opened my eyes about expectations.

On STT, door-to-door trash collection isn't feasible because of the hilly terrain, so many people have to take their personal trash to "public bins." These bins may be more eco friendly than door-to-door pickup, but the bins are often overloaded which creates an unsightly environment.

Sigh. There are so many challenges to living on STT. Determining your priorities will make it easier to decide if STT is the place for you.

If you pay your cell phone bill in cash Mailboxes, etc is right next to the AT&T store in sub base. They also email you when you have a package.

I think Mailboxes charges a little more than competitors, but I think it depends on the level of service you want. I know I checked with them before I made my decision. She's got longevity on her side, though.
