Hi I'm Tina and my husband works in Banking and he might be transfered to St. Thomas to help out for 6 months, I am happy about this except that we have two kids, there are twin boys both 11 years old and im concerned about how they would do. Would they encounter racism at private school? Would they be accepted even if they are not natives (they are two very active boys who play several sports) and also, is there a soccer league for them?
Thank You
A concerned mother

From what I understand, soccer is most popular sport in schools on the islands.

I grew up on St. Croix, I would say that basketball, football, and baseball are the most popular. Soccer is a more popular sport on the non-American islands, though soccer is still widely played here. It's easy for people from the states to be acccepted at private school, I went to a private school, and newcomers from the states faced no problems with racism at all, it's not a problem.

Hello Tina,

I think your twin boys would get lots of positive attention and not likely any racism or negativity at the private schools. Attention because many of the private schools are relatively small so new students can be picked out quickly and secondly because they are twins. What schools are you considering??

Sports: (What sports do your boys play??)
Soccer overall in terms of all schools is not the biggest sport here, like Dominic said about St. Croix, basketball, flag football and baseball and more popular overall. Other sports primarily at private schools are soccer, volleyball, wrestling. Karate can be taken at private lessons. Depending on the school you choose the soccer factor will be yes or no. Antilles and Montessori School have soccer teams I believe. Sts. Peter and Paul I don't believe do and I am not sure about All Saints. I knew of a community team but it was adults and affliated with UVI; you might e-mail [email protected] Stolz, Robert: he is a university professor on St. Thomas that I recall was involved with the soccer there (this was several years ago, but he is still there)- he might know something for teens/youth. Also you might call the private schools and ask about the soccer team, maybe ask for the coaches name and contact info so you can ask about tournaments ect. There is also a VI Soccer Federation - you might call them at (340)719-9676 - they are on St. Croix but should be able to give USVI information including St. Thomas teams!!

Hope this helps!

Hello Tina,

Antilles is a great school and they offer soccer, flag and tackle football among other sports like tennis, basketball, volleyball, cross-country, baseball. Your boys will do fine.
