Greetings All!

My significant other and I are currently laying the groundwork for opening a small, specialized shore-tour business based on STT. We hope to move to the island and start it up next year.

One question that was raised was about transporting our guests around the island. It is our understanding that you have to move your guests via taxi if you want them to get from point A to point B, and cannot use your own vehicle according to the VI code. However, we could not help but notice that some (most?) of the taxi companies also seem to be associated with or run by tour companies.

The question: how do tours run by non-taxi based companies get their guests around? Do they indeed use the taxis (via contracts, perhaps)? And if so, do the taxi companies welcome the extra business, or do they try and “run a block,” as it where, against the “competing” business? Might anyone have any information or an opinion on this, or just might have worked with the islands taxi companies on matters such as this?

We will indeed contact the taxi companies when the time comes, but for now are looking for some “soft” information and some unbiased opinion.

On an entirely personal level, someday I would also like to get my private pilots license “off the ground!” Are there any reputable ground/flight instruction companies out at the airport?

Any information you could give on either subject would be great. Thanks!

MP,
I don't have any idea about your taxi question, but if you're coming to STX, Al Jan at Air Ventures is Paradise is an excellent instructor. I hold a private pilot certificate and hadn't seriously flown in nine years. Al got me current (and safe) again. He's got some package deals for getting your private certificate, but I don't remember what they are. For straight dual time, he charges $120/hr. He's also very flexible about scheduling. His number is (340)277-1433. That's his cell.

There is a pilot's school on STT, as well. Ace Flight Center 340-776-4141.

Regarding taxis, yes, you will need to utilize taxis to transport guests. Find one you like and hire him with a contract. You can also contact the VI Taxi Association at 340-774-4550 or 7457.
