We're moving in Oct. to St. Thomas and can anyone answer these questions.
Whats a good estimate on how much money we should save for the move, not counting the flights and say $800 a month for the rental room for a month.
but for living cost and other unexpected charges we will be faced with during the move.

And how far is it to St. Martin and St. Kitts from St. Thomas and what is the best way to travel there. How expensive is it?

megan,

Your dates determine cost and flight schedule. LIAT currently has a non-stop to St. Kitts, Caribbean Sun and American Eagle require you go through Puerto Rico. Caribbean Sun currently flies non-stop to St. Martin, LIAT stops in Anguilla and again to change planes in Antigua, American Eagle goes through Puerto Rico. Costs I saw started at $300 and went up steeply from there.

How much money you'll need to have on hand when you relocate is difficult to answer. Like you, nobody on this board has any idea what "unexpected charges" you will incur. It also depends on your income, what you consider necessities, etc. If you read past posts on this topic you'll find a wide range of suggestions and perhaps one of those matches your situation.

Just my opinion but I would take what it would cost to live for at least 6 months with no additional income... That seems to be the general rule of thumb.... for me I am not leaving home with out 15 to 20k minimum.

I moved here on a one way ticket, never having been here before (NOT recommended!), didn't know a soul, didn't have a job...I was just winging it. I brought $7,000 with me, got a job my first day on island, stayed at my hotel/B.B for the first week, then the Mafolie for a month ($900) before I got an apartment, then bought a cheap ($1,200) car. It worked out OK for me, but only because I started making money right away. I think I got my first paycheck within 3 weeks of landing on STT, and it was a couple grand. Now, this is for a single guy. Since you say "we",I assume you are at least a couple, if not more. And, if you are to be flying to other islands, as well, I think BillyBoy's assessment of $15-20K might be more in line with your plans. JMHO. Good luck!
