If I wanted to bike to and from work (Crown MTN to RLS) would that be safe? I've been hearing a lot lately that women aren't safe at night. How realistic or unrealistic is this?
I'm having difficulty packing, I have a lot of gear. Camping, kayaking, etc. Would it be a better idea to send it or buy new stuff there. After reading about the lack of availability (and possible expense) of some items I just don't know.
I'm also wondering about health clubs in St. Thomas. Are there many and where is cheap but functional?

Hello Sara,

Crown Mountain is the highest mountain on St. Thomas (1556'). So depending on where your house/apartment is located in Crown Mountain biking the roads could be very hard. Airport, University area, Downtown, Nisky, Est. Thomas/Sugar Estate (the area where the hospital is located); they are all relatively flat so biking is possible in those areas just in terms of terrain. Now safety biking; you'd be riding on the road - as there aren't bike lanes and I'd say that could be dangerous. Also its really hot, sporadic short rain showers... Basically riding a bike isn't a suitable means of transportation on St. Thomas. I only know one guy that did this and he was a triathlon athlete. The terrain is the biggest issue, then the road issue, then the weather.

Not much camping, kayaking gear here to be had so if you want that stuff you should bring it. But definitely try to just bring what you really really think you will use. Sell off some of the excess stuff. Pack some and leave with family - label the boxes and then once on island if you find you want the contents of Box 2 or 5 or whatever then call your family and ask them to mail it. Of course you can only do that with smaller items that can fit in the box dimensions/weight allowed by the post office. You can find that information on the postal service web site.

There are a few gyms. I don't readily have a price comparison.

I appreciate the info....What a great idea to have a method to packing my boxes! Hadn't thought of that. Thank you very much.
