Re-Locating to STT--Car Insurance info?

I will be in STT on 8/9 and I am having a vehicle shipped. Shipping Co. will have plates/registration ready upon arrival. Any info on getting car insurance/providers? I have a confirmed job with no current STT address. I had planned on using my vehicle to look for rentals (w/o paying for car rental/taxis). Do STT car ins. companies deal with this situation a lot? Will I need a local address before I can insure my car and get it on the road? Thank for any info.

You might ask at your job if you can temporarily use their address as your address, and then change your address with your insurance provider and the Motor Vehicle Bureau once you've found a place to live. You need a physical address to register your car and to obtain insurance, and I don't know if using your employer's address is acceptable to insurers or the MVB. You can call and ask insurers and the MVB. Their numbers can be found here: www.viphonebook.com

Where did you ship your car from and how much does this service run you.. Did the shipping co. just ship your car or did you ship furniture or anything else with it.. Curious on how that works and cost.. We'll be doing that very soon...

THanks

I used magic carpet shipping and had a good experience when I bought a car in the US in November. This is a great website for reviewing companies: http://www.transportreviews.com/

Other things of note, you can finance a car you buy in the states using Pentagon Federal ( http://www.penfed.org) and they have no problem giving you a letter to let you move your car to the territory on a boat. To finance with them you have to join the NMEA if you non-military, this costs like $20/year or something. Their rates are fantastic (my loan was like 5.5%) and they were very easy to deal with.

As for insurance, I am using First Insurance on St. Croix because they didn't have any problem giving me stateside limits. I pay way too much, it would be great if the VI government would get their insurance laws to match one of the states (say Florida) that way any company that served FL could also server the VI. We'd all be able to cut our bill in half.

Hmmmm... interesting... so, I guess my State Farm auto and home insurance will not like me moving to USVI????

And what about the medical insurance companies that we use on mainland (Blue Cross, etc)... will they also not like to cover us in USVI?

State Farm isn't an option here. Many Blue Cross policies work here to some degree, but most consider treatment here out-of-network.

So, if you get local car insurance, does it cover you if you travel to PR or mainland... or do you need to carry two car insurance policies?
