Reality check-qualifications for moving to the USVI

Strong opinions are vehemently expressed about the “qualifications" of those who should move to the VI and those who should stay away. Should there be a running list? Should the same "qualifications" apply to people who are immigrating from down island?

I think that many of the regular posters are coming from a place of good intention by offering potential newbie’s advice about relocating to the island. The feedback has been priceless to those who have relocated and others contemplating the move. However, some posters have adopted a position of authority about the "quality" of people that the islands need. To those individuals, I think a reality check is needed about your good intentions.

Something to think about-

I see all posts as an attempt to honestly assess the posters likelihood of a successful move. Someone with few resources and many responsibilities has a greater chance of failure than someone who is either young and free of responsibilities or older and financially more independent. Of course, that's true no matter where you think your paradise lies, but more so on islands a great distance from your support system.

People who move from down-island usually already have friends or family on-island who are ready and able to assist them.

The truth is that maybe one poster in ten will actually make the move, either for a limited time or indefinitely.

People immigrating from down island also know what it means to live on one of these islands. They will be alot more prepared for island costs, quirks, how to find a job, what to expect in pay, etc...

Johnnycake: When you've lived here for many years and came here yourself as a "newbie" way back when and seen so many major pitfalls, it almost stands to reason that now that we have this kind of forum which wasn't available back then that some of us admittedly get a bit testy with some posters. I'm rather confused about your comment about the "quality" of potential relocators. If you're referring to someone asking about Section 8, well...

Cheers!

STT Resident ,
I have come to appreciate your "voice" overtime 🙂 and do not question your position of informing, challenging and at times chiding potential movers. I think your investment in the community has been, from what I have gathered, not just talk but action to back it up.

Having said that, I think that some posters can be dam right nasty at times. If someone fails to heed the advice given, alright then, allow them to make their own mistakes and know that they were well informed. I think that some posters go the extra mile to insult and name call. What is that about?

Moving to the VI is a big decision. It was once such a decision for all the local posters. What does it take to STAY in the VI? Obviously it is more than just a lot of money, although having money does helps. Having read past post, it seems like a profile for moving to the VI has began to form. I was wondering what that profile was and if it is only an ideal that most people who are thinking about relocating can not measure up to.

Best,
Johnnycake

Johnnycake. There is no magic formula and there is no generic profile. Sorry to drop that ball but the USVI attracts such an admixture...

Cheers!
