Hi, all -
We've got a group of 8-10 women from St. Croix who are looking for a great place to stay in Puerto Rico for a weekend in May, preferably a large vacation home in walking distance to nightlife and shopping or near Old San Juan.
Anyone have any personal recommendations??
Thanks,
Julie

At Wind Chimes is a lovely, small, boutique hotel. It's not the vacation house, per se, but with a group that size you would take up most, if not all, of the hotel. You can walk to the Condado, but not Old San Juan.

If you want to be in old san juan go with a real hotel, the apartments/building you see downtown are usually two bedroom at the most. There are a few boutique hotels like cervantes, or larger ones like covento or sheraton. I live on stx and go to san juan for shopping at least twice a year but I like being closer to plaza las americas (big ass mall). I always try and stay at La Concha in Condado or Stelleris. With a group of girls La Concha would be my choice. Condado IMO feels and looks a bit like south beach, but there will be more restaurant choices in san juan and more clubs in isla verde. We never rent a car we just take turns paying for taxis. Driving AND Parking are a absolute nightmare there.

We stayed at Marriott Stellaris on our last visit, but walked over to LaConcha when we couldn't find a place in the Marriott to have a drink AND carry on a conversation at the same time (just too loud everywhere). That's probably where we'll stay next time. I didn't book it this last time because one of the reviews on trip advisor referred to it as "Jersey Boy" style, and a few reviews said it was really best suited to the young party crowd, which we definitely are NOT. LOL

Last time in SJU I tried out Casa Condado on Condado Ave. It's a no frills place that's convenient to Condado (about 3 block walk to beach) and very easy on your budget. There aren't any big hotel frills, but at around $100/night, even in high season, I found it to be what I needed for a short business trip. Their number is 787-721-5193 and Claudia Rodriguez was extremely friendly and helpful. Have fun!

I'm confused by which one you are saying is too lous because they are both Marriotts and both will have loud music on the weekends. Honestly, san Juan is a loud town especially weekends. Bring earplugs if your a light sleeper like me. :). But neither place is jersey style. What I like best about la concha is (3 things). The rooms have floor to ceiling windows so when ur in bed u feel like you're on a boat, love the high ceilings, and wonderful light( except in the bathrooms). They have 3 gorgeous pools. And lastly all of their restaurant have excellent food, not to mention their main bar makes such good drinks they are worth the prices!

If you like to work out on vacation this is the place as well. A huge glass gym that looks out on the ocean. Wish we had one of those. Sorry for typos on my iPhone. 🙂

Did not realize LaConcha was a Marriott. I was saying the Stellaris was too loud. I don't remember what day of the week it was, but we were only there for a quick trip. I'm thinking Friday or Saturday, but the noise wasn't the usual dancing music. At the Stellaris, it was just LOUD, period, even during the day. When we walked into LaConcha, it was like an oasisof calmness.

The Jersey Boys thing was from Trip Advisor...as I've said before...everyone has an opinion, and who knows, right?

Take a look at The Gallery Inn (www.thegalleryinn.com). The tranquil atmosphere is fantastic and walking distance to everything in Old San Juan (if you don't mind the hills). They would probably work with you on a package deal. We've only stayed there once for a long weekend getaway, but I'd make a return visit in a heartbeat.

I've only stayed at the Stelleris twice, but neither time was it noisy during the day. Maybe it was a special PR holiday when you were there. What I like about the stelleris is the rooms are again decorated nicely with high ceilings. But there I actually like the city view rooms. The first time we went one of the desk clerks showed me about five different options. I choose a corner city view room and really loved just watching the town on the massive balcony. They also have nice tubs which is always a bonus in PR.

El San Juan Hotel in isla verde is another good choice for a group. They have the best night clubin San Juan and several good eateries(but not great). Great pool with bar and nice swimming beach, no where as pretty as stx though. The just went through a major renovation so all the rooms are nice.

But you absolutel should go to the ritz Carlton spa. I think the rooms are way overpriced but the spa is a real spa. And an incredible staff. And the rates are just a little higher then normal but you will not regret it. Plaza las Americas, home depot and ritz Carlton spa are my musts! Let me know if you want restaurant suggestions. 🙂

The Condado Plaza also has undergone renovation in the last year or so. Now called the Conrad Condado, I think. Very central location. You COULD actually walk to Old San Juan, if you're up for a little trek. You can also walk the other direction to the other hotels and restaurants along the condado. We stopped by on our last visit, and I, personally, thought the lobby was very tacky, but that's no big deal.

If you don't want to make the long walk to OSJ, you can just walk across the bridge, at the Conrad, and have several more bus options than from the other condado hotels.

Have fun.....so much San Juan, so little time!
