We are coming to STX mid-sept. to check out the possibility of moving there and wonder if we can get some good recommendations from locals for some of the sites to see and who to go to for rentals and lessons. We'd like to do kiteboarding, surfing, Buck Island, Sandy Point and deep sea fishing, in no particular order. There are some places online but we want to know if there are some locals we can get connected with that aren't part of the tourist trade but have the knowledge and equipment for us to really explore the island and water? (Our experience has been these folks can show us a better time and are more "real" than the ones with websites and business cards). Thanks in advance.

Sounds a lot more like a vacation than a recon or PMV -- you may want to consider rental housing, employment opportunities, mail, banking, phone, internet and infrastructure logistics, grocery, healthcare, schooling and transportation needs.

X 100!

By all means have fun! But as you said none of those things are PMV stuff, they are great vacation activities, unless maybe the OP is retired already and so that's what everyday life would be like for them?.

sorry if i didn't give enough info.....we have already lined up a few job interviews and house rentals (those things seem easy to plan online) but want to get to know the "real" STX activities and that seems a little more covert and underground. we are late 40's, kids are grown, we are very athletic and outdoorsy, love the water and are wanting to get a boat for snorkeling, diving, skiing, etc. also interested in surfing if anyone knows a good instructor? (we snowboard but haven't tried it on the ocean yet). thanks!

so really this vacation is just to see whether you will have enough outdoor activities to keep you occupied once/if you move here?
