I have been searching for information I read several weeks ago about what needs to be done in order to register an auto. I recall something about buyer and seller having to get the title notarized???? I can't seem to find that info. If someone could tell me the steps that need to be taken when purchasing an auto from an individual on St. Thomas, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Kathy,
You need to have the actual registration and the title notarized. If you do not have the title as so many people here don't it can be dealt with at the registration. Take the notarized registration, title if you have and a copy of your insurance card which they will keep.
Hope this helps.
Pamela (a notary public)

Pamela, do buyer & seller have to go to MV together with the registration, title and buyer's insurance? My daughter is buying a car in St. Thomas (private individual) and he said he would give her the keys & title when she pays him. He is then leaving St. Thomas. Don't know if he is coming back. So, I need to know if seller has to go to MV. Everything has to be done properly before he leaves. Thanks so much for your assistance.

The actual proper way to do this (which is very rarely done)is that the seller goes to DMV and has the registration canceled and then turns in the tag. The seller then goes to a notary with the canceled registration and title and signs it over to the buyer. The buyer then goes to DMV and re-registers the car. The typical way is for the seller to go to a notary and have his signature notarized on registration and title. He thens turns this over to the buyer when the buyer pays. Buyer can then go to DMV. Seller need not be present. In other words, notary does not have to be at DMV and Seller does not have to go to DMV.
