Have read this message board at length and think we get it. When it comes to USVI relocation "there’s nothing new under the sun"....We are a couple in our early 50's with over twenty years of hotel/restaurant service. We want to escape another Maine winter and experience the 'Don't Stop The Carnival' atmosphere first hand....So, this is what we've gathered; Just fly off to STT, find temporary accommodations, hit the streets, hotels and restaurants, pick up the local newspapers, visit realtors and listen to the word of mouth. Bring lots of cash, no pets and plenty of patience?....Have we got it? Is it that 'simple'?....Any suggestions?...Have affiliated employment opportunity in St. John but housing and transportation are challenging/expensive, right?....Any realtor suggestions?....Any attention, consideration and assistance is very much appreciated.

Hi there,
Welcome to the board 🙂 If looking for a realtor on STJ give my husband a call he's with Town and Country Real Estate and his name is Les Otis and he can be reached at (340) 642 5752 he would be more than happy to show you around. Good luck with your new adventure (and by the way it's 85 degrees and sunny right now and it is snowing in our old home town of Kansas City, hopefully you are doing better than that 🙂 )

You are exactly correct. Bring lots of money, lots of patience, the right additude and a sense of humor and your chances of success are very good.

What part of Maine? There are a couple of Mainiacs down here. I spent some time in Bar Harbor (winters there was like doing time).

I think you've got it right. The big thing is to come with the right attitude. It took my wife about 6 months to adjust to the lack of state-side shopping opportunities and no Chili's Applebees, etc, and the lack of quality fresh produce, and a different perspective on customer service. If you're planning a dinner party you have to plan on hitting 2 - 3 markets and have a plan that will adjust to what's available. But after 6 months she's learned to roll with the punches. And having enough cash is key.

The give it time thing is also key. It will take you 6 - 18 months to adjust to "island life". This isn't the States. And its not going to be. You have to adjust to the system and the way of life, its not going to adjust to you. Some things here are just wrong, but that's the way it is. We all work within the system to fix the broken stuff, but you can't go balistic over things. It appears that this is the most prevelent root cause for people not making it here.
