Relocating my Lab to STX

Has anyone relocated a large (approx. 80 lbs) dog to STX from NY? I was told by someone in the states that he needed to be vax at least 6 months before arriving. But as far as I know, there isn't quarantine on STX... Is there? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Search the archives and you will find plenty of information on this topic -- a search on "large dog" would probably do it. There is no quarantine here.

As I recall you need some sort of health certificate issued within 10 (or was it 7?) days of travel. There's no quarantine.
The only problem you may have is that during the hot months there may be travel restrictions. If you get a direct flight out of Miami in the early AM then you can get around it. Otherwise you have to do an overnight or two to get the dog on a plane before travel restrictions start (usually at 85-degrees as I recall) and then do each leg in the same manner.

Temperature on your destination (STX) end doesn't matter. It's the places where the dog will be on the ground for connections that will determine whether the dog can fly or not. If you end up on an American Eagle flight I think there is a kennel restriction to a size 400 kennel but that may have changed.

Some of the airline routes won't ship larger pets after May 14. I think they reinstate shipping them in mid October. Definitely check with your airline before making any travel palns.

Also, the last weight limit I heard was a combined total of 100 pounds or less, including the FDA approved carrier. Good luck! If my husband wasn't a pilot, our animals would never have made it over in February because of the temperature restrictions. 🙂

Speee1dy, I thought the same thing! Even though it's not easy to move a large dog to STX, it has to be easier than moving a bunch of chemicals.

Dcruz218, good luck with your furry friend. Apparently there are some charter flights that you can take as well. Lots of stuff in the archives.

Continental to Puerto Rico, then a private charter from San Juan to STX, should be less than $1000. Continental has the best airline care of dogs and ventilates their cargo holds.
