Relocation - Job

Hi,

I am very interested in moving to St. John or St. Thomas however there is one thing that is holding me back.

Where can I look for a job? Currently I work for a global financial firm in the investment risk management side. Unfortunately my firm does not have a location on the islands.

Can someone point me in the right direction for jobs in the financial field?

Thank you!

Only recently would there have been a job for you here. St John is like Beverly Hills so you can forget just moving there right off the bat. Hit STT and then if you want keep your eyes open for a place in STJ.

Contact the EDC Comission. Make as many calls to get a list of the EDC companies that do "consulting" which seems to be all of them.

As far as STJ goes I think it's totally over rated. And I was in love with that place for a long time. It has changed much in the last few years. Hostile bums and jerky waitstaff. forget it i could go on.

Dear NYCGirl,

Although there are many opportunities available to someone such as yourself with your qualifications in tow, you simply must do a PMV. There really isn't much you can do from off-island.

"All Islands" obviously has a bit of a grudge where St. John is concerned and I beg to differ with him. Of course there have been many development changes over the years on STT, STJ and STX but the LEAST affected island is St. John because the majority of the island (thanks to Nelson Rockefeller) is overseen by the National Park Service.

Yes, the Cruz Bay area has changed enormously over the years developmentally. The majority of the island has not and will not, thank goodness.

I'd suggest you do a really good google on this forum and then directly approach some of the financial institutions here (I know that "Islander" who runs this forum has posted the VI telephone listing source but I'm too tired to do it right now!)

I'm afraid that I haven't been of enormous help but you have to do your own legwork, girl! And the most important thing you absolutely have to do thereafter is spend the money to come here for a few weeks to not only investigate job opportunties but to see if island life is really going to suit you. This isn't anything like NYC - and that can either be really good or really bad.

Cheers and good luck from a 21 year resident!

Another thing to consider. I believe companies who get tax benefits from EDC must employ a certain (high) percentage of "residents". This means people who have lived on-island for at least one year.

But STT Resident is absolutely right, you have to come and check things out for yourself. And if you don't have time or can't afford a PMV -- well, you really should reconsider moving here.

The St. John comment is about the hostile bums, which are ridiculously common in such a small place like Cruz bay.

On top of that it's not the "locals" that are giving the 'tude at the local reastaurants. I've been around all the islands for well over 20 years. It's the jerky transplants, bums, and drug dealers that are ruining STJ.

The place is beautiful beyond comprehension, no doubt.

It should not be that hard to farm out your resume. Yes there are local requirements but I think there is still a good chance to get a good job with one.

Good Luck. Please don't read my post with anything other than a smile. 🙂 🙂 he-he

To over simplify.... EDC is a tax break program that has attracted many "financial consultant" style investment houses. They are required to hire X amount of employees and give X to the commuity among other things.

Just a very quick question to AllIslands:

It seems you have had some experience with, "jerky transplants, bums, and drug dealers that are ruining STJ" in the Cruz Bay area, so have you done anything about the problem as you see it?

Have you called the police? Have you worked at setting up a neighborhood watch between business and residential owners in the area?

As long as "anyone" sits back and does nothing and crime runs rampant, then "anyone" is basically condoning crime and allowing it to continue. It takes a community to combat crime and sometimes it takes just one person to start to make a difference. Sitting on one's duff and watching the criminal world go by and kvetching about it on an open forum when you're apparently doing nothing constructive to ameliorate the problem - well, get off the negative, get off your duff and work to make a difference!

For every negative there's a positive but only if you make it happen.

Cheers,dear!

NYCGirl,

I too live in NYC and work for an investment banking firm. I will be moving to STT in 4 weeks. I am interested in working for a financial services firm as well and have done my research. It is a bit of a catch 22 but everyone I have talked to would prefer you to actually BE on the island first before they even talk about hiring. If you have enough saved to last you for a month or so, finding a job through word of mouth or going to different companies you will be hired in no time.

Good luck!

Victoria: You actually should have enough to keep going for about 3-6 months. Your first job may be just a transition thing, until you can get your bearings and figure out the lay of the land. The famous Catch-22 about having to be here to move here is just one of the many ways that the VI is not quite like other places. You may not get an EDC job right off the bat, but the banks are usually looking for qualified people, etc.

What have you done about it STT Res?

I have a feeling that I have done infinitley more to better the community of the USVI than you could ever dream of doing.

By posting about jerky transplants I am hoping that our kind readers don't find themselves turning into one.

STJ has MORE than enough resources than STT or STJ combined when it comes to heavy hitters and influencial people.

I will conserve my energy to help out the public schools, police, fire dept, and many, many cherity and non-profit organizations that are actually in need of help. St. Johnians need to take up this issue.

I am not sure who killed your puppy but just because I contradicted some of your posts you have an issue with me. Let it rest and just a reminder... you started the hostlity. Maybe you need AA.

Love.... AI

Dear All Islands,

Methinks you confuse me with somebody else. In my 21 years here I've done much for the community although if you choose to believe that you've done more than I, then so be it and my most esteemed congratulations to you!

Again, as far as confusing me with someone else, I don't know anything about a puppy that was killed - haven't had a dog in many years - and haven't a clue about any "hostility" issues you refer to.

Dear me, you have me quite befuddled!

Hi Dr. Shchmoilster,

Good luck to both you and your g-friend.

I wish I could move, but it just doesnt seem possible with high cost of living and scarce jobs.. Also my 2 mini dachshunds wouldn't like the islands very much..LOL
