Hi,

My family is originally from STT and although I always go home to visit once or twice a year I've never felt ready, or inclined to stay permanetly...until now. I'm tired of New York, the pretentious sycophant corporate america b.s., the cold weather, rude pedestrians and even ruder motorists; and would like to return home. Problem, I could use a job that pays moderately well.

I'm an Editorial Assistant for a children's publishing company and would love to eventually return to school after I have settled and found myself a job, and a a place of my own. Can anyone suggest jobs in the creative industry (i.e., Reichold Center, Newspaper, Media company, magazine publication, etc)? I was just home visiting in April and the biggest excitement on the island was Home Depot. I'm experienced in all Microsoft XP programs, type 65 wpm, articulate, poised and professional with an excellent phone manner, skilled in arranging meetings, making travel arrangements, preparing expense reports using Excel, tracking invoices, writing correspondence, proofreading and copyediting, and have extensive experience in creating PowerPoint presentation. I have also worked as a freelance writer for 5 years, writing for several magazine publications, and contributing noteworthy feature articles and bylines on varying topics ranging from: music and movie reviews; celebrity interviews; social and cultural features; in addition to covering concert events, and product reviews. In addition, I have had my poetry, short fiction stories and essays published in literary magazines I attended Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York for 3.5 years and do have plans to return to college to continue my pursuit of a B.A., and an MFA in English Literature/Creative Writing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Caribbeanchyck

You might try some of the marine publications - All At Sea, The Triton, Dockwalk, Carribean Compass, Yachting Magazine, Boats and Yachts, Cruising Magazine, Latitudes and Attitudes are a few which come to mind. Do a google search for their emails or PM me for the addresses. Sorry, not at work at the moment and don't have them at home.

If you've read many editions of the Avis, you know they could use an editor with grammar, spelling and punctuation skills!

Had to chuckle at the last two posts! Yesterdaze says, "STX Avis was look (sic) to fill a position.." and then Alexandra Marshall remarks that (the Avis) could use an editor with ...etc.

I have very fond memories of the days when Ron Dillman was the Managing Director of the Daily News and Penny Feurzig also reigned supreme as ? and, Penny, you can slap me sideways for not remembering your proper title! That was before Jeffrey Prosser purchased the Daily News, the Island Trader and Innovative Telephone and Cable TV...

They used to have the most hilarious bloopers which left me reeling with laughter and I still to this day have some of them on file - which I would 'fax over to either Ron or Penny and get a 'phone call chuckle from them in response. Some examples? Just for some levity here:

In the PETS FOR SALE column, "FULL BREAD ROTTWEILER..." I guess better a full loaf than a half and,

"Free to good home - beautiful 2 month old grey stripped kitchen...and

In the LOST AND FOUND - "Black dog with toes found in Mafolie area.."
I really don't go for black dogs with no toes.

In the HELP WANTED column, "LIVING HOUSEKEEPER..." Why would one want a dead one?

I guess WAY back then, and I'm only talking about 15-20 years ago, we'd just laugh but, of course things have changed enormously and it seems that a pervading sense of doom has infiltrated ad nauseum. Too bloody bad!

Thank you so much Pam I was able to get everyone's contact information, but forgot how difficult it is finding work here on the island unless of course you're doing independent work in the market. The search is still on...

STT I remember them as well and know that they could definitely use a copy editor and proofreader. What do you think - would they want one LIVE OR DEAD? 😉 I'll definitely give them a shot and see if the position is still open. Thanks everyone I really appreciate the help, and the expedient responses on the board!
