what would be the best bet at finding rent to own condos/houses?

would a realtor be the best bet?

I've never seen any rent-to-own on STX.

Same difference. No weird or unusual home loans in the island. You'll need at least 10 percent to put down on a mortgage. Upside is foreclosures are extremely rare. Locals build there own home over long periods of time without a loan. And those houses are generally passed down rather then ever seeing the mls.

And once you move here, it is usually recommended that you live here for 6 months to a year before you commit yourself to buying something.

You might, and I repeat might, be able to find an "owner finance" situation. They are rare and it would probably be something that you would "stumble" across.
It never hurts to talk to a realtor, but this type of situation would almost certainly be invisible until you were actually living on the island.

I think it's probably doable, if you keep looking and talking to lots of people. I know of at least one deal in the works right now for a rent to own. There was a house for sale on here (classified forum) a while back advertised either for sale, or for rent, whichever came first. That sounds like a good candidate for RTO. Go over to the classifieds and search for it...oh...maybe 6 weeks ago??

The rent to own ads you see on craigslist for the VI are not real.

Your best bet on RTO is by word of mouth...using this site is good. I agree about Craigslist. Although CL works well for some things, RTO properties are hard to find. You can send me a private message if you like, as I know of a few.
