Running Group?

Is there a running group on STT? I've been to other Caribbean islands that have them, and most belong to an international association of "hashers." You can Google for info on these groups.

I met someone the other week who would like to start a similar running group on STT. Running is not my thing, but I'm always willing to promote active, social outings.

So if you're interested, or know someone who might be, post here, and we'll see how it goes. There's a tentative run scheduled for next weekend (Oct 1?).

Here are two V.I. running organizations...

Pace on St. Croix: http://www.virginislandspace.org/

and STAR (St. Thomas Association of Road Runners) Their website seems to be down.

Thanks, Islander. Someone from STARS sent me a PM.

You're not interested? All the other islands that offer something similar seem to be able to create an online forum to keep people informed to encourage participation. Why is the VI so user unfriendly when it comes to group participation/outreach???

Why would Islander be interested? Islander is the spokesperson and moderator for a forum, not a promoter. You've been given the information about runner's groups here, running is "not your thing" but you want to do something for those who like to run, so follow up on your own initiative. If you get things organized I'm sure this site would be more than happy to spread the word.

Old Tart... relax :)... Perhaps Ms411 saw VInow's full page ad in today's Island Trader where we state that we support VI Olympic Athletes... and figured we might be a sports/fitness oriented crew... and therefore might be interested in this new running group! Or maybe Ms411 was just asking, for the sake of asking.

Now to the question...

Ms411... not sure about the user-unfriendliness of exercise groups just being a VI thing! If you meant getting islanders involved in groups period, any kind of group. Well, I'd want more details on your experience with this and why you think that way before trying to give two cents on the topic.

An idea for the running group... If your acquaintance that is starting the running organization gets a motivated group of people together I am sure they will be successful. Getting the word out and reaching interested people will be the key. There was a group of business people with stores/offices downtown that were getting together early in the am on weekdays and running... biking downtown. I am aware of it only by seeing them in action. But obviously those folks were motivated as they were at it at the early hours of the AM!! And there are always people running at Magens Bay in the morning and afternoon. The National Park area is also a popular spot; also the airport road in the afternoon. Perhaps your acquaintance can go to some of the popular running/walking spots, with flyers, and get the word out about the group. Keep the board posted on how it’s going.

PS: Not much of a runner myself.

My running friends, of which I am not one, find that running on STX is pretty challenging. The South Shore road is an option, but no shoulders. Most other roads are either too busy or too twisty. Ric used to walk the North Shore Road near Cane Bay and that's a pretty good option.

Thanks everyone. I'll refer them to STARs now that I have a contact number. I don't think they knew about it. I vaguely remember hearing about them a while back, but since I haven't seen any activity announcements recently, I thought they were no longer active.

And yes, I knew Islander had an interest in athletic activities.

HI! I am a runner and moving to St. Croix. If not running on the roads would you recommend any beaches to run on, preferably Christiansted/East End area? THANKS!

For running, I would say maybe Ha'Penny beach on the south shore.
