Hello!! My husband has just gotten a new job and we are moving to St Thomas in about a month. I am really nervous because we have a nine month old son. I was just wondering if anyone new of any play groups or mommy and me classes or anything of that nature. Or anyone who also has a young one living on the island. I am looking forward to our move I only wish we had more time. Thank you so much

Hi Seneca,

Good luck with your move. Try not to be scared, living here will be an adjustment, but once you get yourself and your family settled in, hopefully you will find that you like it here:) 🙂 :)!

I don't have children, but do a search for "Mommy Group Gathering" on this board. I believe that there was a group that met in February.

I am new here myself (7 weeks today), but if you have any other questions, let me know -- I will at least take a shot at trying to give you an answer:)!

Hi Seneca,

I like living here (STT) a lot! I liked it from the start and I enjoy it more every day :).

I made 6 PMV's, and feel like I got to know the island fairly well before I got here. The PMV's helped quite a bit, but having a job lined up (as your husband does and my husband did) I think, is probably the most important factor as to how well and quickly you will assimilate.

Grocery stores....................

Be prepared to visit several stores to find everything on your shopping list. That is just the way it is here. Also, you will frequently need to improvise. Something you like might not be available every time you go shopping. In fact, you can pretty much count on that. Have some back-up choices and be prepared to substitute. Along these same lines if you see something that you like, buy two (or several) as it might not be there the next time you go shopping.

If there are things that you find you cannot live without and you are unable to find them here, you might want to have someone ship those items to you from the mainland -- or try to find them online.

Try new things. I have found all kinds of exotic foods in the stores that I have never seen before in the states and a lot of them are great! Check out the little roadside stands. Again, you will find a wide array of interesting items.

I definitely spend more time grocery shopping here than I did in the states, but I don't really mind it too much. I just allow myself extra time for shopping.

Some grocery stores that I know of (locals please feel free to correct me or provide edits of my location descriptions):

Plaza Extra: Tutu
Marina Market: Red Hook
Cost-U-Less (Warehouse type shopping): Near Home Depot
Price Smart (Another warehouse type club): Near Tutu
Food Mart: A few minutes outside of Red Hook going toward Bovoni
Gourmet Gallery: Havensight
Pueblo: Two locations that I know of -- one near Havensight, one near the airport

Good luck :)! Any other questions, feel free to ask or PM!

I have an 11-month old daughter. I too am a member of a mommy group, our babies are between 11mos and 18months.

I have found the swimming class at Magen's Bay to be a great place to meet other babies and their mommies. They should have a new course starting some time in May.

Hi. My husband, duaghter, Savannah, (almost 20 months) and I moved here about 6 months ago. You're going to love it. There are something that take some getting used to, it is after all "island life." There are several mommy groups on the island. I have friends who participate. I myself haven't gone to any do to av ailbility but trust if my friends go they are good. We do go to swim lessons at Megans. That's great. Really enjoy the instructor. My daughter goes to a great school, College Prep Learning Center. They are terrific. If you need anything please PM me. I will give you our number. I recently quit my job so I have much more free time. Take care and don't worry your son will be fine. There is much love on this island. Cheers, Shannan
