Any advice about how to secure a rental car and wallet/watch at the beach? I understand there is a history of thieves breaking into cars.

Don't bring your wallet with you! You can buy a plastic water proof carry case that can fit cash, credit card, Drivers license, keys etc., and strap it to your wrist or swim trunks. Don't lock the car, leave the windows open you should be OK.
