I am shipping a vehicle to the States from STX.

I have been told that I have to go to the Lieutenant Governors office to insure that there is no lien on the vehicle and then to the BMV to investigate any outstanding tickets. I believe that the BMV provides you a letter of clearance.

Is this the correct procedure....thanks in advance!

Ditto... Last time I went to the Lieutenant Governor's Bldg. they would only accept cash... Just in case...

And I think the documents are only good for 24 hours, if I am not mistaken...

So, what is the cash for?

Are you saying that this has to be done within 24 hours of turning the vehicle over to the shipper?

I recently did one on Dec. 15th, turned the vehicle into Crowley on the 23rd and it sailed on the 29th.

Yes, I had to pay at both the Lt. Gov. Bldg. and at the BMV. Something like $15 on one $25 on the other. Both at the BMV and at Fleming Transport, reminded me to bring the vehicle to the shipping point within 24 hours.

Well, I guess you could have the BMV certify that you had no outstanding tickets and then pile up a few before dropping off the vehicle for shipment.

So, it somewhat makes sense that they have a constraint on the time period after visiting the BMV.

Here is the process.

You go to the Lieutenant Governors office to obtain a letter of clear title on the vehicle.
This letter is good for 3 Days.
You then take the letter to the BMV so that they can provide a clearance of no outstanding tickets on the vehicle. This is good for 1 month.

Ok... Thanks for sharing because I have to ship two cars very soon. It changed quite a bit from the last time I did it a couple of years ago when they told me it was 24 hours forcing me to take a day off at work. I wasn't bad as I did everything the same day, dropped it at Flemings, which also took care of rewashing the undercarriage, and off it went on it merry way. It is good to know there is some leeway now!

As for payment, did you still had to use cash or did they have the option of plastic too? That is that the LT. Gov. Bldg....

Haven't done it yet, just talked to the supervisor at the BMV.
Based on my experience at the LG office, they will take cash or check.
The BMV will take credit cards.
