Short & Long Term Rentals

I am going to STX hopefully as a pre move visit May 30-June 5 this year. A little more than a month away! 🙂 If we decide to move, it will be in April 2006. If everything goes well and we do decide to move, we will need temporary housing for about a month until we secure jobs. We will have enough in savings to last for 3-4 months, but hope to be in short-term rental for only a month- as the research we've done has shown us that short-term is rather expensive. At that point, we will want to rent a house/condo or apartment. We have been looking for places that will do 1 year rental contracts and have not had much luck. Our hunt has also been difficult because we will be bringing a yellow lab with us. We are leaving her in the states until we secure jobs and find housing that will allow her. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to look? It seems the only thing that comes up when I use a search engine for "rental+St. Croix" is luxurious rentals WAY out of our price range. Does anyone have any good links I could check out? Thanks.

Everybody is going to tell you the same thing. It's too soon to look. Suggest you start trying in February/March next year.

Thanks for responding so quickly. It's not that I'm looking to secure anything right now, we just want to get a feel for what's out there and for how much. I know the market and availability will change from month to month (especially with people renting out their own attached apartments), but we are just trying to gather info on short & long term fees (other than those luxury homes/condos which run $1500/week). We are also looking for info on apartments/condos/etc- complexes or privately owned (locations/monthly rent, etc.) I know there are regular apartments and condos available for renting (like in the States- 6 or 12 month contracts), but I can't find any info on these types on the net.

We rent a 2 BR/2ba poured concrete (very important) house on someone's property on the northwest side of STX for $850 a month. We've also rentend a wooden cottage - 2 BR/2BA - in the same neighborhood for $675 month.

There are very few apartment complexes as we know they from the continent, and almost none on-line. Most are more expensive than what I'm paying. We found one that we liked when we first moved and the rent was ok, BUT they charged $.09 for every gallon of water used. That can add up pretty quickly.

Good luck,

Hello ChristyMarie,

As Ric mentioned not much online in the line of apartments/condos for long term rent (residents). The ones you are finding online are vacation homes or villas.

Your best bet is to spend perhaps two days of your pre move visit driving around, call some apartment classifieds in the Avis Newspaper and go look at them and get an idea of whats out there, check out the condos. In order words its a task best done on island because there aren't online resources with all or even some of the apartments listed like there are for big cities and towns in the US.

You can get a ballpark idea of rents in the cost of living section of this site, click on the Home link at the top and then use the navigation to get to it.

Hi Cristy, we are renting a condo in NW Christiansted for $1400/mo. It's fully furnished, 2b/2ba and includes cable. I know of one other condo place with the same prices and some that are a bit higher.

Now, I will tell you that the condos are individually owned and it's important to see it first. The one we rented on another person's word is filthy and not well kept even though the owner lives in another unit on site or close by. We have seen a few others here and they are much nicer looking.

We are either moving to a different condo or going to look for a rental house soon!

Thanks Brandy! Do you know if they accept pets?

There is one place I know of that does accept pets. It is called Ocean Terrace and is in Christiansted. That is the place we are thinking of moving to. We left our dachshund in TX and we'd love to ship her to us here. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me at stxhsmom@yahoo.com

RIC (or anyone else),

Three questions about apartment rentals:

1)Are utilities generally included in those prices?

2)Does the $850 for a 2 bedroom you mention reflect the off-season price, or is that what one can expect from say December through May?

3)Is there somewhere online that one can begin to gather a list of realtors, or owners with apts for rent? I don't see where this website or the (online) island newspaper gives much beyond the large resort advertisements.

I am also looking for a rental in June 2005 until June 2006. If anyone has any helpful hints it would be much appreciated!!! I have the Settlers handbook, but its not very helpful for someone, like me, that does not have a million dollars at my disposal!
thanks for any and all help
