Hi all,
I may be moving my PMV trip up to this month(next few days) or early May.

I've checked AirBNB, VRBO and Flipkey and the Classified board here. Are there any other sources for short-term non-vacation stays/rooms/studios? Contact name/number, someone have a couch? LOL

I find it hard to swallow $100+ per night when I'm there looking for work and permanent housing, etc. not vacationing.

I know there are housing boards in town(Red Hook, etc). Should I just book a couple nights somewhere and then try to find something more economical for the remaining weeks?

Also, Car Rental - I see a variety of places online - Is Discount Car Rental a good choice? Again, not looking for a Cadillac for my vacation, just some reliable island wheels to get around.

Thanks in advance, I've loved this forum!
Danny

I've rented from Discount for an event; they were fine. I don't recall their rates being much different from others.

If you want cheap(ish) accommodations on St John, there's always camping at Cinnamon Bay.

Don't camp. Bad idea for many reasons.

We only use dependable car rental when we pop over. I find the best rates there. Make sure you do a REAL THOROUGH walk and mark everything. Their cars are older so they're pretty beat up. I don't think budget allows for ferry to STJ. Plus budget burned us like 5 years ago so we refuse to use them. Scammers.

I know you're coming to look for work but to be honest if you're worried about $100 a night are you considering the 5k you'll need for set up when you move here? Maybe you have that already and are trying to save money, I get that as I travel a lot and do the same but it's expensive here and there's no way around that. Especially expensive for set up. Oh wait! Are you a bartender? If so I can link you up with a decent lead for a pretty nice place. Should be good money - but they need well experienced bartenders. STT right?

Make sure you check any cheap places for bed bugs. Well actually you should check any hotel/bb for bed bugs, really.

I'll second Dependable Car Rental.
Seriously, I'd just pay the $100 per night and enjoy a nice one bedroom place to myself. You might find a studio for less but you might as well enjoy yourself while you're checking things out.
Good luck.

Thanks...no bartender experience, also on my "someday might be cool" list of things to do in life.

Dependable rental cars, got it!

Reminds me of the old saying don't ever buy a car from honest John or eat at a place called moms. LOL

Yes, already have a nest egg but it's not large enough and the PMV was not in my initial planning. Was going to "jump in", but glad I found this forum and slowed my roll.

August and September will probably have the lowest rates.
(Also good time for finding long term rentals.)
If you stay out on the East End/Red Hook area there are many marinas, charter yacht companies, hotel resorts, day sail and power boat operations, the STT Yacht Club, etc.

Check out studio rentals at Sapphire Hill Villages.
Maybe something in your budget.
Or forget the pmv if money is tight and just jump in.
Not usually recommended but you're single, no pets so you'll probably have an easier time. Just bring as much $$ as you can as island living isn't cheap.

Here's a studio you can rent at Sapphire for $1290 for 27 nights.
https://www.vrbo.com/4130975ha
That would give you time to find something more permanent and do your job hunting.

This one rents for $540 for the week.

https://www.vrbo.com/1046449

Here's one for $69 per night.

Note: I don't know these owners.
Be sure to ask if the 12% USVI Government Room Tax is included or additional and if there are any other fees or charges in addition to the nightly rates.

That was my initial thought, things normally work out for me with my attitude. The extra 2-3 grand to fly-down, rent car, short-term stay could go towards vehicle shipping I didnt plan on (was going to bike/motorcycle originally, but have since learned thats not practical or safe.)

Y'all have been a big help. Have to regroup my timetable.

Good luck.

couchsurfing.com I've hosted several folks through this and have really enjoyed having the visitors. It's free.

Yes, PMV's are usually recommended to almost everyone that finds this site.... but, I am kind of guessing that you might be the kind of person who could just do without that and save the money instead. Just make sure you always have enough money to get yourself a plane ticket back should you really just decide this isn't the place for you. You seem to have the right attitude though, taking in what you've read here.

Just for curiosity sake... how many people that live here or have lived here did a PMV before they moved? I did not. But I did have a roundtrip ticket. Had less than $1000, but met a friend who had a brother that lived here and was able to crash at his shack for about 10 days until my friend and I found a place to stay and jobs. (It was a ROUGH way to do it though!)

i did not do a PMV but I would come down here and work for a few weeks at a time several times a year for about 5 years so I knew exactly what I was getting into.
