Small Dog VS Centipede

My wife, I, and our small 7lb dog will be moving on island on June 4th. We've lived on STX for half a year but we've never had a dog on island. I've seen a centipede kill a young chicken and I was wondering if any of you have had problems with your dogs? I guess it would only take one time for him to learn? Just wouldn't want our dog to get seriously hurt or possibly die because of a centipede.

I have no idea how a centipede would kill a chicken (or a dog) - anyone
Are you sure you don't mean a Mongoose??

I haven't had a dog bitten by a centipede, but I had one stung on the nose by a scorpion (on another island). Luckily I was home because his nose started swelling more and more every minute. The Vet said he probably would have died if I hadn't got him there in time, because his airways would have become totally constricted. He suggested keeping Benadryl handy in case of an emergency, because it might at least buy me enough time to get to the Vet. (In liquid form with a syringe to get it in the mouth, because tablets might be too difficult to administer in an emergency)

I'm sure I mean centipede. The little chicken we saw only lasted about 5 minutes after it was bit. It was quite a bit smaller than our dog but just wondering the effects?

My point was that just like us, if your dog is allergic to a centipede bite, I'm sure it could be fatal.

Make sure you get the plain benedryl, not the one with asprin/tylenol or anything else combined with it, which is not good for dogs. After they are bitten it takes about an hour for them to get comforable. Hope you never have to use it.

Betty, thanks for mentioning that. Please dog owners, don't ever give your dog Tylenol, it is extremely dangerous and could be fatal!

I have a teacup poodle under 4 lbs and a cat. Both of them have gone after centipedes. I grabbed the poodle. She mostly was barking and rushing at it. The centipede was trying to get away. The cat kept batting at it and the centipede tried to bite her but she was too quick. It then escaped under then escaped under the grill. Anyway we have been here 2 years and none of our animals have been bitten.

I have had dogs for all the years I've been here and I've never known any of them getting bitten. Two of my dogs are 'hunters' (at least in their own little minds) and they chase lizards and anything else that move so they have the best chance of being bit... but haven't yet (knock knock). They have been stung by bees and jack spaniels (they chase them and try to catch them in the air - nutty dogs). Fortunatly no allergic reaction, just a yelp and run.

I've heard bad stuff about frogs too and I've been fortunate that I've not had a problem (I've got tons of frogs on my property, evidenced by the noise at night) but evidently not the bad kind or I surely would have had a problem by now.

Its a dangerous world out there. Keep your pets with you and watch them closely.

Centepedes do try to get away. I've caught my cat toy with one that was almost 10 inches and about gave me a heart attack. I've had two seperate dogs bitten and I really dont think they were "hunting", in fact, I know one of them was just sleeping when he got stung. Maybe he rolled over or one or spooked one walking close to him. I don't think they are usually agressive.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess i'll just have to keep some liquid benedryl around and keep a close watch on our little dog. Thanks again.

my small dog has gotten stung on the foot a couple times outside. She yiked for a while and favored it for a few hours and then had no further effects. My cats have always killed centipedes and then played with their dead carcasses for a while.

Try to read here https://stoppestinfo.com/168-the-whole-truth-about-centipedes-which-would-give-you-an-adrenaline-rush.html about that, but i think if the centipede are poisonous (And they are so) he can kill a little dog if he kill a chicken.
