Only five days til I leave for my PMV...getting excited! Just had a quick question. I love to snorkel, and have always rented equipment. thinking now that it might be cheaper to just buy it and have it. What does it cost to rent for a day on STT? Anyone recently bought a fins/mask/snorkel set and know what it costs?
Here at Dick's its about 30 bucks. Also, is the snorkeling pretty easy to access yourself, without a guide like a lot of places I have gone? Like you can just walk off the beach and go?

Hello Meg,

If you are moving here then I would say go ahead and get yourself a good set.

I have seen them rented at different beaches for $5, $7, $10 a day and in some cases $5 or so for an hour or two. You can rent for a few days from dive shops. Not sure what the price on multiple day/week rentals is.

Yes you can snorkel from beaches in a few locations; like Sapphire Beach, Secret Harbor, Coki Beach, Hull Bay - to name a few that are good. And then of course you can snorkel at other beaches too, just some are better than others.

Thanks! I am thinking I will just buy it. It makes more sense. Even if the move doesnt happen for some reason, I will always at least be vacationing at beaches...

I heartily recommend buying your own so you're not chasing a rental clock on how long you have, and since you're hoping to move here, and seem to enjoy snorkelling, the expense of the purchase is minimal.

Buy it here or stateside. Might find a better deal stateside, but they are not a really pricey item here.

Just want to reenforce what Islander noted - yes, all our beaches are public access and you can snorkel at any of them should you choose to do so. You will soon find the one that you like best.

I have a regular "tour" that I take at Secret Harbor, looking for very specific fish......well specific types, haven't started looking that closely or naming them just yet, but ....heh you never know!!!

I would definitely invest in your own gear. I got my fins at Chris Sawyers in Red Hook. They were extremely helpful and can definitely point you in the direction of some great snorkel spots. I actually got my mask in the states because I wear glasses but my boyfriend got his there and after wearing it he wasn't comfortable with it and they gladly took it back and exchanged it for something better.

We did some great snorkeling in Waterlemon Cay and the Indians.

have fun!
