I have a question about social security. I tried to find the answer in past posts but can't find it. Do social security taxes get taken out of an employee's pay there just like it is taken out here stateside? Say if I move there and become a permanent resident and have a job with a business does social security get taken out of my paycheck? If so does the money go into the same social security fund as stateside and get added to the social security taxes that I have paid in already since I started first working in my life?

Yes to all.

And, should you find yourself self-employed, you'll pay income taxes to the VI government but Social Security/Medicare to the federal government. That involves a couple of different forms and goes to different places - instead of sending a single check to the feds.

Some employers here don't take any taxes off and issue a 1099 so you can deal with it yourself at tax time. And NEVER overpay your income taxes in the VI expecting a refund. Once Hovensa gets done with the GVI, there won't be any money left for anyone else's refund.

Thank you for the information. That is good to know. The other question that I was going to ask after that was about if I was self employed there. Thank you for the answer on that as well. I did read many posts about making sure one owes the VI government not them owing you since you will not see it for a long time. I am still in my mental planning stages of moving. I have been reading and keeping up with this forum on a regular basis although I have not posted much. I am coming to St Croix in May and so excited. However, it will really be a vacation trip this time. LOL. The next time we come down will be more like a PMV then PMV each time after that.
