social support/networking at lunch or happy hour on STX

Hi Forum Members!

I have a question/proposal:

My husband works at home. It is isolating, especially when there are frustrating aspects, like internet or power outages. I want to set up some kind of social support network, so he can still enjoy human contact on a daily (or at least weekly!) basis. My question is, does anything like this exist? My proposal is that we try to set up a weekly lunch date that people can either attend or skip; it would just be an option for people that want some company. This would also tie into the thread of "support local restaurants!"

What is a good lunch spot that is decently central? I know Off the Wall is a nice place, and not too crowded at lunch, but I don't want to exclude people who live way east.

Is once a week a good plan? Because if there is enough interest, and people think they would attend, we could set up a couple of different days - ex. Tuesdays at Off the Wall, Thursdays at Deep End, and then if Tuesdays are better for some people, they could go then, and if Thursdays are better they could go to that one. Just an example with particular restaurants and days of the week!

Thank you so much for any suggestions people can give to make this work!

Since alot of us don't work for ourselves, lunch might be hard to take off for many. Lunch unfortunately at many restaurants on island is not under an hour affair for the working class. Make a dinner once a month for board members and you'll probably get some good attendance.

Depends on whom you'd like to attend........like people who work from home? And yes you do become some what isolated.
However if you want to meet folks from this forum.....dinner is prob more like it.

Or twice a week, Mondays at ( was at Traceys, may be moving to Parrots cove). Tuesday at Chicken Charlies, Wednesday at Parrots Cove, (unless they go with the Monday night.) To find out about Monday and Wednesday, ask Paul at Chicken charlies on Tuesdays, he MCs them all.

Wooooooooweeeeeeeeee Trivia! *-)
Chicken Charlies seems to be packed those nights & it may be a hoot to meet alot of people there. However if you are NOT into drinking & cig smoking & crowds, it may not be your thing. Casual & relaxed, then you may want to see if you can get a group of home workers together......kinna like a home schooler get together. My husband works from home as well............shut in that reads too much Drudge Report.....lol. You do seem cutoff from the rest of the world............but the hrs are great! Depends on what you want.
Also another way to interact with others is to volunteer some where..........Closet 2 Closet needs help on Saturdays, Animal shelter ALWAYS needs help, Light house in C'sted needs help, 10,000 Helpers in F'sted.............form a beach clean up......... or hang with Richie, the local C'sted bum................that would be entertaining!

when I was working mainly out of my home, I would not have wanted to do lunch because it would have disrupted my day...I preferred to get moving in the morning and work right through and then be done. Getting changed into "public" clothes, getting in the car and driving somewhere for an hour lunch that took 2 hours (someone comes late, food is slow, etc, etc) plus drive time... if I'd done lunch it would have ended work on that particular day--which was fine on days when I wanted to do that, but it would not have been my preference schedule-wise.

Some of the tables at trivia are not into a lot of drinking, will have a beer or two - sometimes none, and smoking. We enjoy each others company and the game.

Yeah, I agree with a lot of you. I just thought a quick lunch stop might break up the day for people who work at home. But I can try to send my husband out at night (I can stay home with the kids) for poker, trivia or happy hour. I will keep thinking about the best way for this to happen. I agree that if he had to go somewhere far it could turn into a two hour situation. His social interaction these days is kind of limited to going to the police station to see if they have retrieved any of our stuff from the thieves... and they haven't... Not exactly the social support I had in mind!

Newarrival: My wife and I will be on island for four months starting Jan 1, and we both are consultants and will be working from home. We'd love the opportunity to meet up with others in the same situation, but as others have pointed out, at the end of the day would be much better than in the middle. We'll be one of the people "way east" (will be staying at the Reef), but would be up for meeting up for dinner in the evening depending on where. Cane Bay would probably be too far for us during the week, but somewhere in the C'sted/Salt River area would be doable.

Cheeseburgers..............they have a play area for the kids!!!!
Maybe that could be a place to meet home workers at night & both you & the hub can come along..........oh yeah & the kids too!
Deep End is ok for like a lunch.............there's a ham radio meeting we try at attend the 1st Saturday of every month.............tho all the gear talk, RF waves........wah wah wah wah.............for a tag-a-long its just background noise, but the view is great!

Crab races on Friday nights at Deep End. Fun for adults and kids.
