Thanks everyone for the responses to my questions so far! I definitely appreciate all the good info. This is kind of an academic question, since I just ordered a phone from Sprint, but I was wondering how good the coverage with them was on STX? Also, in terms of used car hunting, are there any places I should definitely look, and, more importantly, places I should avoid? Thanks again!

Sprint coverage good on most parts of island.
Buying a car-keep an eye out on this message board classified, craigslist and local papers as well as ask around the office when you begin work. If you rent while looking for a car, I believe centerline rental has the best rates on island, especially by the month. About $800 for the month.

You might want to try Olympic Rent A Car. They will always try to be the lowest price rental in the island. Right ow all the rental companies are selling their older vehicles. By law they can only have cars no older than 4 years in the rental fleet. 2008 Yaris or jeep patriot are going for around 10K.
I have Sprint and yes, there are some blind areas, same with thye other companies since most of then share the same towers. We also have the Sprint hot spot but only 3G availabilty. It's slow but we got used to it. The advantage is that we travel to that staes quite frequently and can use it up there.
Because of the lay off's at the refinery, the island is somewhat depressed and good deals can be had in cars as well as rentals.
