So whats the deal with the dumpsters mid island? Is there an etiquette? Whats with the people hanging out there?

They want first dibs on the good stuff. Best case scenario you tip them for helping unload heavy stuff for you. Worst case for them, you unload your own stuff, and nod, say "okay" and wave goodbye and there is nothing of interest for them in your trash.

Also worst case, they steal something out of your car. One of the guys at the
Mid island was known for doing that. Before I moved to where they have trash pickup, having to deal with those guys alone annoyed me so much, I would throw my trash away in the dumpster at work.

I guess getting a few dollars for throwing trash is better than pan handling in the street, though.

Some of those guys can be very aggressive and downright threatening. Some are OK and come in handy, if you need help with something heavy. It's a crap shoot as to which ones are "on duty" when you arrive.

Today the guy asked me if I knew anyone that wanted to buy a weed whacker.
