I'm thinking about moving to St. John for my summer break. Does anyone have information on places that aren't safe to live? I am wanting to stay at Cinnamon Bay for a while. Is it hard to find employment?

Although I have yet to visit St. John, my impression from this and the vacation forum is that St. John is a very safe island in general. I'd head over to the USVI Vacation message board and do a search on Cinnamon Bay...there's lots of info there and people who've stayed there very recently. As far as employment goes, I believe that a certain amount of education, a positive attitude and a lot of persistence will land you employment. You don't say what field you are interested in though, so I am not sure. You will need a vehicle more than likely. Best of luck kym! and as for me...32 days and counting! Can't wait.

Hello Kym,

If you are only planning to come for summer break you are liking going to be looking for work in tourism sector related things like restaurant/bar/excursions/shops. Jobs in other fields, you might find difficult to get because of your intention to only be on island for summer. For the tourism related jobs, summer brings the ending of high season and the beginning of slow season. Some employees that were here for season will be taking off so jobs will open up but you also have to keep in mind that the employers don't need a whole lot of staff because business is going to be slower. You'll definitely want to have money to keep you on you feet while you find work. Cinnamon Bay campground is a cool place. You can check them out on line for photos and information if you haven't already http://www.cinnamonbay.com. St. John is a small island, largely National Park, there really aren't any unsafe neighborhoods so you can look for a place wherever is convenient to work and in your budget. Since you are only interested in a couple months and mentioned Cinnamon Bay (camping) you might check out the work program at Maho Bay, http://www.maho.org/WorkPrograms.cfm. And its a little dated but there was someone from this message board that went through the work program and wrote about it, you can read their thoughts at https://www.vimovingcenter.com/what_to_expect/movingstory31.php. (There are some other good stories there too.)
