Hey All,
I just had a few questions that I hope you wouldnt mind helping me out on. I am planning on moving to St. Thomas with a good friend here in the next couple of months. She has been living there but is moving back to the states until I have (hopefully) been accepted into the University and than we plan on moving down together and getting an apartment. And my questions are all though I have researched and found that school will begin for me on August 18, 2006, when would be the best time for us to move down and get ready for the up coming year and getting arranged in our apartment? Where is the safest location for us to be living? Where are the safest jobs available to a college student. And also, how would we go about buying a car? I know these are a lot but I am compeletely clueless on this whole idea of moving to another country and all though she has lived there roughly 3 months. She had a place and job lined up for her when she moved there and I dont think itll be that easy when we come down. Thank you so much for all of you help.
XoXo

Hi Ohio.

Questions asking about "best" and "safest" anything are difficult to answer because what's best and safest for one is not necessarily true for another. First you need to be aware that if you move here you are not actually moving to "another country." Buying a car here is the same as anwhere else in the U.S., just check the Island Trader, which comes out on Thursdays and/or go to the car lots. Good and bad areas on island are mixed together so you will have to look at the available rental units and decide if the areas they are in meet your requirements. Getting settled usually takes a few weeks; since August is low season you will likely have a good selection of apartments to choose from. Safety is relative and most jobs in stores, bars, restaurants etc. are fine as long as you exercise the same caution you would anywhere else where you are unfamiliar with your surroundings.

I think she should treat the experience as moving to another country. That's the problem with a lot of newcomers, they think it's going to be like the US, when it is in fact, like living in another country.

It's impossible to answer your question about the "safest location." There are many areas on St. Thomas and there are no designated "safe areas" or "dangerous areas." It's all a big mix, pretty much.

Ohio: Would your friend be able to look around for the two of you? It really helps if someone is physically here to find living quarters. Have her look on the west end or north side. Those are the most convenient to UVI. You'll want to be close to those 8 o'clock classes!! She already has a place and a job? Is she giving those up?
