Hey there and erm ( ponders the rpoper island greeting) good morning!

My wife and I are coming to St Thomas on the 18th of August and are going to be staying for 6 months. We are hoping to get some "insider" information as to where we should shop for groceries, and other staples, while on the island. We are also considering bringing our own car along for the trip. Is this best or should we rent a car? Might somone out there suggest some things that we may be needing to bring with us rather than waiting to purchase on the island?

We hope to get a feel for island living while we are there and possibly find a nice place to buy if we like it enough to settle in. We appreciate any info you might share.

Thanks in adavance for your help.

Rob and Maura: Welcome to the Moving Center! If you click the home page then peruse some of the info there, you will be ahead of the game. The "What To Expect" stories are particularly insightful.

For grocery shopping, I am currently pleased with Cost-U-Less for most items, but I fill in at Marina Market. Then there is K-Mart for some of the other stuff. Shopping here is like a scavenger hunt, you take your list and drive around hoping to get the majority in one day.

Hello Rob and Maura,

Renting a car for 6 months is going to be about the same price as buying a used car. And shipping a car is pricey as well, depending on where its coming from, taxes etc. You can buy a car here. Research this some more. You will want to have a car. There are several past threads that people posted an outline of the expenses involved when they shipped their car - you might look those up.
