Do the Islands have an equivalent of a 'state ID' instead of a driver's license? Does anyone know the procedure to get one? I don't plan on driving after I get there( at least not for a long time)
TIA.

Bob,
You can obtain a VI identification card similar to a state ID. The easiest and most useful if you are not going to get a drivers license is to register to vote. The voter's ID has your picture, SS# and birth certificate number and is accepted as valid id anywhere around here. It can also be used to get in and out of the BVI. You need a birth cerificate with a raised seal and a social security card or receipt for application of such. Takes about 15 minutes.

Some info. on registering to vote in the USVI.

Registered USVI voters cannot vote for president or vice president.

Persons voting in local U.S.V.I elections cannot vote in elections back on the mainland.

You must be a resident to register to vote in the USVI. Residency status for voting purposes is granted after 90 days of living on island.

Registering to vote is free. You will be required to present your social security card, a proof of citizenship in the form of a US passport of an original birth certificate.

If you have a stateside license just use it as your picture id, I know quite a few people that do (yes they take a chance driving without getting a VI license.)
