Strange question... sinkhole

So, we happened to look out this morning and noticed and area of our yard about as big around as a regulation size pool table that was sunken. (This is new.) We kept an eye on it and it has sunk deeper... about two and a half feet deep now.

It looks like it might be over a sewer pipe and there is water gushing down our street... we turned off our water main and it is not coming from us. We called WAPA and they said they didn't have time to take a look.

Anyone have any ideas what to do about this?

i am surprised no one has responded to your post. what island are you on and what neighborhood? i know next to nothing about your problem...but if it were me i would be flipping out by now especially with wapa's response!! i know people will probably laugh at and criticize my response ..but here i go! wapa is government run. i would email or call 1st thing tomorrow morning one of the newly re-elected more responsible senators...sam sanes, nellie o'reilly etc. why not deJongh's office ? what is happening to you is a nitemare especially in light of wapa"s response. take multiple pictures etc. if need be go public on one of the local radio statiions asap tomorrow am and put out a public request for a response from `cassandra dunn....good luck and let us know how you make out

OMG that is scary, and horrible! Your yard is sinking, and the street is sinking too?!?? In what area of STX do you live?? I think Lily has some good suggestions. For your sake I I hope it doesn't get worse! Keep us posted.

This is obsurd. I'm so sorry for your plight. I might even call the local news and have them do a report if it is as bad as you say.

We live west on STX where there has been sooooo much flooding today! (Did anyone else see the pictures of lesgislature's drowned cars?)

I forgot that tomorrow is a holiday. Thanks for reminding me.. Our neighbors came over and dug up the yard where the WAPA pipe was gushing and put a capper on it. Said it will hold until WAPA does come, whenever that is. There is a definite sinkage area on the side of the street, but most of it is our yard. All of our neighbors have called Wapa now, although I doubt there is much they can do now since the guys fixed the gushing. Also, it fortunately seems that the breakage is on their side of our meter, so hopefully we won't have to pay for the repairs! Jeeze, what a mess.

Update: The water appears to be gushing from a broken valve in a WAPA water pipe. We called WAPA and they said that no one is available to come look at it right now. Meanwhile, we don't know how to turn the water off at the meter so it is likely we are being charged for this water. WAPA refuses to acknowledge that we won't have to pay for the gushing water because "Only customer service can do that and they are closed until Friday."

In the meantime, part of our street is now sinking as well.

Well, the water isn't gushing anymore, thanks to the neighbors coming over to put a cap on the pipe... WAPA still hasn't come (obviously) and the hole does not appear to be any deeper, although the morning I noticed a new crack coming from our yard out into the street. (not too far into the street yet.) Definitely not as bad as the street by Fort Frederik beach!
