STT during the holidays

I realized that I'm going to have some downtime over the holidays with some major projects wrapping up and many friends out of town visiting family. I'm considering a quickie pre-PMV to do some scouting and maybe get the ball started a bit early.

I’m obviously looking for a good deal on places to stay, and I’m hoping that maybe this is a down week since a lot of people are visiting families and not going on vacations/cruises. Maybe I’m way off and it’s a crazy busy peak time.

Many hotels only book full weeks, but in other resorty places I’ve stayed, I’ve had good luck just showing up at a hotel in person and asking if they have a cancellation for a night or two. This is one instance where customers seem to get better service in person than they do over the telephone. I want to do this because it will allow me to move around and stay in a variety of places. This never works during peak times, such as up north during 4th of July or Labor Day weekend, etc.

Some thoughts or feedback would be great – thanks!

most of the hotels find themselves 100% booked during the holidays. There might be an open night or two here and there. It'll take some calling around to put together a piece-meal hotel stay. Alternatively, there are still a few condos not booked for short-term rental over Xmas and New Year's.
