I'm flying into STT from Miami next Friday and arrive in at around 9.30 pm. I would like to get over to STJ that night (doing 8 tuff miles in the morning with friends). So, the website says the ferry from Red Hook runs until midnight, but I just wanted to get some first hand advice on whether this is true and I'll actually be able to get to STJ that late at night. Thanks!

Yes - although that Miami flight is routinely late -- the 11 or 12 oclock ferry will get you to STJ.

Will be that much faster if you only have carry on and no checked bags once you arrive in STT

There is also the private Water Taxi. It's pricey, but it's a sure thing. 340-775-6501. They wait for the plane, no matter how late it is. They also have taxi drivers that take you straight to the boat, so you don't have to stop along the way.
Checked bags are not a problem either. The taxi driver gathers up all the Water Taxi people. Most of them will have checked bags, so you might as well, too.
Actually, come to think of it, if you are taking a regular taxi to the ferry, they wait for the van to be full, including people's luggage, so that won't save you any time, unless you have someone other than a taxi picking you up.
