because myself, my husband, and our two toddlers are soon to take up residence there. 🙂 Ok, the kiddos are actually quite well behaved for the ages of 2 and 1, but ya know the capriciousness of the tiny. 🙂 I wanted to write and thank everyone for your active involvement in this forum, as I have poured over these posts in an effort to gather as much information as possible. I have written a few times in regard to our PMV and general questions and have appreciated the responses. We have just recently accepted the job offer and looking to probably arrive sometime in September. It is quite exciting and I welcome the opportunity. Of course, as a woman with two little kids, the crime factor weighs heavily on my mind. I have had the opportunity to speak to a handful of mothers in STX- all of whom were happily settled and did not feel that they to be shut-ins to keep themselves and their kids safe. It is hard to reconcile those opinions with some of those that I see on this forum- which sometimes projects the air of lawlessness- so I wanted to just write a post to gather as much feedback as possible about the safety factors of living on STX with small children and any tailored advice you might offer. Thank you so much again, and see you around! :@)

Good luck on your move, Shib.

Regarding "It is hard to reconcile those opinions with some of those that I see on this forume which sometimes projects the air of lawlessness..."

If "thinking about relocating" people would stop posting questions about crime, there'd be less discussion of it! (not suggesting you shouldn't ask, however, just saying)

People's experience with crime here varies widely depending on their age and circumstance. If you go to bed early and live in a nice area, odds are great you'll be fine. The thing is, however, that once you start living here, you'll perceive crime differently because it WILL hit "closer to home" simply because the island ain't that big.

Thanks, guys.

Neil- I definitely take no issue with its discussion, and in fact am quite grateful for the vast amount that safety is discussed here, since it is my foremost consideration as a parent. I know that ultimately my comfort level cannot be assuaged without first taking the move, but I am trying to gather as much info as possible in order to best be prepared. It definitely makes sense that crime will seem magnified due to the small surface area of living space haha. While I have lived in large cities much of my life, I am coming off of 10 years in a very sheltered suburban-type lifestyle (which I am happily exchanging in lieu of a more enriching experience for my family and myself) so I worry that I might have "softened" or not know what to look out for, if that makes sense. Common sense I still maintain so hopefully that is sufficient. I suppose I was simply inquiring about inside tips. Many of which I have already read, but it can't hurt to solicit more. 🙂

Thanks all.
