Went to a local place in Frederiksted last night - Motown. Hole in the wall by the Frederiksted Hotel. The owner/bartender was the nicest man i've met in awhile, lots of fun and happy to make the customers happy. the food was really good - i got curry chicken, scalloped potatoes, vegetables and seasoned rice with a salad first for $10. Boyfriend got oxtail with all that stuff, $13. super yummy, great people and service.

does anyone know when lori's place (new place) in cotton valley out east is opening? live in that area and it seems it is taking forever to build. is it going to be store, rest., and deli? that what i heard. but cannot confirm rumors.

Paulie of "Lori and Paulie" told me "hopefully November"

The appropriate question then is "which November???" It was supposed to be open LAST November....

Ok so we did Savant last night...

Not sure how I would rate it....so you be the judge...

The appetizer was something called a spliff...filet mignon, with portabello mush, green onion and rice rolled...like a sushi roll...$13 the roll had way too much rice and just a corner of meat..the rice was extremely bland and because it was so much it killed the app....which only came with 4 rolls by the way.

The meal took forever to come, but that was fine...they gave us comp'd wine...when the food arrived (I had the Filet Mignon with grilled shrimp...Mel had a pork chop...) The first bite gave me the OMG feeling...it was really good...but then after getting halfway through I realized the food didn't blow me away...I was just hungry and the meal was a step above Applebee's...the same steak...mashed potatoes and veggies they serve...just a much better cut of steak and cooked much better...the shrimp was awesome...Mel loved her meal

Service....was not bad...but it was not good for that kind restaurant...my entree was 39 dollars which puts the restaurant in the fine dining category...our server would be awesome in chicken charlie'sish restaurant.

So I guess overall it wasn't bad...but for the price you pay...you make the call

How true.

I forgot to ask Paulie "where" out east. He said "right down the road" (I live next to him). So it made me wonder if they were buying Chicken Charlies. I heard a rumor a while back that it was up for sale. Anybody?

If it's the same location that they originally planned, it is the new building (being built) on the corner of Sierra Verde road.

I read a newsletter from the Reef a few days ago about the deli at Lori's. There are 2 guys who will be taking over and running it.

I forgot the names but one guy is an owner/partner(?) of Anna's Hot Sauce and the other guy is a chef who has worked all over the place..Kendrick's, Bacchus, etc. The letter said they plan on leaving the layout the same with half deli, half country store, and the outside dining area.

I live at the Reef and I sure do miss having that little store there. It's a long drive in for milk and eggs, no matter how bad the price gouging.

I wish the new guys at the Reef deli nothing but luck!

Great news to hear about the old Lori's space. We spend a third of the year at the Reef and really missed the convenience of Lori's when it closed this year.

I flew over to STT yesterday. I wish we had a sushi bar that was even almost as good as Beni Iguana's. I can't believe that Dashi can't get fresh fish like BI. Beni Iguana's has everything that you expect in a stateside sushi bar and the portions are almost twice what you get at Dashi. I guess you do get a benefit for putting up with all of those tourists.

Don't get me wrong, I do eat at Dashi, it's just that I complain about it every time I do. Small portions of anything except maki rolls(rice is cheap), very poor selection of sashimi and nigiri, no roe except tobiko. I miss good sushi.

Dave Trask from Good Spirits catering is one I know of. He chefs at Ha'Penny, awesome guy and fabulous cook, best of luck to him!!!

I read in the paper that Columbus Cove restaurant is closing on Saturday.
Anyone know if someone is taking the restaurant over. What a great location.
I see they have all the equipment for sale also.

Went to El Sol last night. Great steak, big baked potato and salad for $16. Good service.

lol so you have her allergy list as well,a chef i used to work with would put stuff from her allergy list into her meals and she never had a reaction. lol you chefs can be so mean,i worked with a chef in minneapolis and he would flavor his brown rice with bacon grease and then feed it to the staff, well we had alot of muslims working at the hotel at the time and he called it his muslim marinade

Of course I have that list. I always took care of guests with allergies because I'm allergic to seafood and shellfish. When I eat out I hope that the cooks use the same precaution.

Chefs can be mean, that's true. But messing with an allergic reaction is no joke!

I just read a book called Turning Tables by Heather and Rose MacDowell. It's a little on the light side, an easy read. If you have ever worked in a restaurant, you'll get a kick out of it.

People with allergies appreciate your kind words chefnoah, can't believe people (chef's you know trw) intentionally hurt people. That is terrible! Everybody deserves to eat well, no matter they're allergies or preference. Talented chefs see this and are up to the challenge of making it taste good. Used to wait tables and cook, never duped anyone even with decaf coffee. Would love to know all the chefs here who take it seriously????
