*I have a family member that lives on St. Thomas and he had said there are some unique opportunities for employment in the summer months, may-august. I was wondering if you would be able to give me any information about jobs relating to renting water sports equipment or life guarding. In the past I was informed of a position that offered the employee cottages to stay in for free and you would work for the employeer a certain number of hours during the day to pay for your rent. If you have any knowledge of any outdoor, seasonal position I would be very interested to learn more about them.
Thank you.

Hello Laura,

The live/work situation sounds like Maho Bay on St. John.

http://www.maho.org/WorkPrograms.cfm

and a Story from someone who worked there can be found at:

Seasonal jobs are easier to find during season; late Nov-May. Our off season is May-Oct; with Aug, Sept, Oct being the slower of the off months. That being said we still have visitors so jobs in tours, beach attendants are still available. Typically to find this type of work you need to be on island; show up in person to talk to the manager or owner.

Life guards... the beaches that come to mind with lifeguards on St. Thomas are Magens Bay (the lifeguards there have been there forever, but call and look into it; they also have beach wait staff) and Brewers Bay on Sundays only - I think it may be a voluntary position - not sure. Cinnamon Bay on St. John has a lifeguard (that would be a job through the National Park).

All the best,

--Islander
